Basketball Communications Associate

Position Overview

The Charlotte Hornets seek a part-time, paid communications associate during the 2024-25 NBA season (September – April) to play a key role in the day-to-day operations and objectives of the communications department. The candidate should be detailed-oriented, well-organized and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist the Hornets PR staff in all aspects of the team’s public and media relations efforts.
  • Prepare credentials, cover sheets and visiting media/PR packets for every home game.
  • Track and compile daily media clips, help generate monthly coverage report.
  • Contribute to team publications (media guide, training camp guide and preseason/postseason guides).
  • Attend Hornets media availabilities and events (interviews, press conferences, media day) and transcribe quotes.
  • Compose press releases, media advisories and media availability updates as necessary.
  • Serve as first point of contact for media on home gamedays by staffing media entrance and will call.
  • Help with game notes and statistic tracking.
  • Set up and tear down all media areas on home gamedays.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Skills, Experience And Abilities

The candidate should demonstrate the following ng competencies to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, communications, journalism, sports management or related field preferred.
  • Experience in collegiate or professional athletic communications, sports information or sports media preferred. Game notes experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Outlook and Basketball Reference/Stathead is a plus.
  • Must be well-organized, detail-oriented and demonstrate an ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to multi-task under time constraints, meet deadlines and work efficiently and accurately within a fast-paced industry and environment.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people and develop strong working relationships.
  • Excellent communications skills – both written and verbal.
  • A resourceful problem solver and a team player.
  • Extensive knowledge of the NBA and basketball statistics.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
