Summer 2024 Youth Soccer Coaching Intern

The Youth Coach Intern will gain hands-on experience performing a variety of roles within a fast paced, behind-the-scenes environment, with the chance to have a direct impact on professional soccer in Kansas City. Sporting Kansas City’s collaborative environment full of learning opportunities is designed to help all interns evolve their capabilities, challenge their strengths, and reach their fullest potential.


The SKC Youth Coach Internship program is designed to give prospective coaches first-hand coaching experience with youth soccer players between the ages of 2-18y. The SKC Youth Coach Intern will have the opportunity to shadow and coach with the following programs and teams: Sporting Stripes (2-5y), Sporting Stars (5-8y), SKC Skills (5-9y), Sporting City (7-18y) – 7v7, 9v9, 11v11 teams. The SKC Youth Coach Intern will report to the Director of Coaching, Academy Affiliates and will have the opportunity to receive guidance and feedback from coach educators throughout their internship.

This is an unpaid, educational internship opportunity. All SKC interns must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree or must have recently achieved their bachelor’s degree and be able to receive academic credit through their college or university degree program.

Essential Functions

  • Attendance at all required practices/sessions through program – including evenings and weekends. Dates and locations will vary.
  • Create weekly, age-appropriate practice sessions for review from Director of Coaching, Academy Affiliates
  • Exude enthusiasm with all participants, engaging them in a motivating and encouraging manner through positive reinforcement, patience, and maturity.
  • Nurture individual and team play based on the Sporting Stripes and Sporting Stars curriculum and model of play.
  • Maintain professional relationships with parents, coaches, and players.
  • Assist with tasks as assigned, including: marketing, communications, other administrative duties.
  • Represent Sporting Kansas City and its related affiliates in a professional manner at all times.

Skills and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in bachelor’s or master’s program
  • Current or previous playing experience
  • Previous coaching experience preferred, not required
  • Passion and commitment to child and athlete development.
  • Prior experience with early childhood coaching and/or teaching preferred.
  • Possess the knowledge and experience gained from playing soccer or working in early childhood.
  • Ability to read/understand written curriculum
