Performance Nutrition Fellow

The Utah Jazz Performance Nutrition Fellow will be led by the Director of Performance Nutrition and work with the Nutrition Staff collaboratively. The Performance Nutrition Fellow will have a unique opportunity to be involved in multiple aspects of the Utah Jazz organization, including nutrition and dietetics along with the culinary aspects of daily operations. This position must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure work environment while maintaining the organizational ability to identify and act on job duties quickly and effectively. The Performance Nutrition Fellow must be prepared to work as a team member in a dynamic workplace and challenge yourself to grow at a high level while maintaining attention to detail. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Performance Nutrition and Nutrition Staff
  • Inventory and place orders for necessary vendors and maintain good-standing relationships
  • Maintain clean, professional, and stocked fueling stations (dining, weight room, and court)
  • Manage athletes’ post-practice and game care (shakes, meals, etc.)
  • Assist Director of Performance Nutrition with road logistics, including travel (locker room snacks, hotel menus, plane meals, and post-game meals at the arena)
  • Attend road travel as assigned by the Director of Performance Nutrition (75-100%); assist with logistics and contribute a nutrition presence during team travel
  • Lead feedback system for road meals (arena/plane) for players, coaches, staff members
  • Attend all home games and operate the athlete pregame meal action station at home games
  • Conduct consults with athletes including, but not limited to initial/follow-up assessments, sleep, injury/surgery, allergies & intolerances, etc.
  • Develop and deliver nutrition education talks to small groups (culinary staff, players, coaches, etc.)
  • Interpret body composition and bloodwork results; relay and educate athletes/coaches
  • Research, evaluate, and educate on appropriate performance supplements for athletes
  • Provide a high level of customer service, communication, and experience at all times to all entities
  • Assist with the cleaning, sanitation, and organization of the kitchen, walk-in coolers, and all storage areas
  • Collaborate with the Culinary team in support of athlete needs (including, but not limited to menu development, allergies/intolerances, kitchen prep, appropriate portions, and educational topics)
  • Serve as a mentor to other non-RD interns (ie. part-time university capstone intern)
  • Ability to work autonomously, when necessary
  • Follow proper reporting procedures for accidents and incidents to ensure follow-up and prevention
  • Ensure quality and safety of food by performing standard and any additional sanitary measures including sweeping the floors, cleaning surfaces, as well as proper covering and storage of food items according to standards and procedures
  • Adhere to all regulations including blood-borne pathogens, infection control, use of hazardous materials, and fire safety.

Experience and Preferred Qualifications

  • Start date- Summer League: July 1- 26, 2024. Regular season: August 19- end April 2025 (or completion of post-season)
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (required) in Nutrition or related field & Master’s degree in Nutrition or related field (preferred)
  • Registered Dietitian (Commission on Dietetic Registration) or RD eligible
  • Licensed Dietitian (State of Utah) - upon hire/credentialing
  • Minimum 2 years related nutrition experience, preferably in sports nutrition
  • ServSafe Food Handlers permit, within 30 days of hire (ServSafe - https://www.servsafe.com/ServSafe-Food-Handler )
  • Highly adaptable, with excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace
  • Superior time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-recognition and problem-resolution skills
  • The ability to work flexible hours to accommodate business requirements will require evening and weekend work schedules
  • Salary– About $4,800 per month

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Lift up to 50 pounds; repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements; bending and reaching
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Will be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, such as when working near ovens or retrieving food from freezers
  • Manual dexterity required to use knives and kitchen appliances
