A quick summary about the Player Development Analyst role:
Do you love technology and basketball, and have the ability to take complex data and break it into bite-size, digestible pieces? We are looking for a Player Development Analyst who is passionate about basketball and the NBA. Your primary responsibilities will be analyzing individual player performance, identifying key development areas and communicating insights to relevant stakeholders. Additionally, you will be a key member of the cross departmental Player Development Committee that is responsible for our players holistic development. Our ideal candidate will also be able to utilize knowledge of basketball concepts to aid the development of new metrics and reports that can be leveraged by the entire basketball operation.
What the Player Development Analyst role will do:
- Analyze individual player performance using in-game tracking and markings data to optimize player development.
- Create and manage systems that support and track player development processes.
- Lead the development and maintenance of performance reports and BI dashboards and communicate the actionable insights to relevant stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the basketball research team to find deeper insights related to player performance and development.
- Develop metrics that accurately measure basketball skills.
- All other duties as assigned.
What the Player Development Analyst role needs to have:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- 1-2 years working in sports analytics or within a sports team is required.
- 1-2 years of experience in data analysis is required.
- 1-2 years of high-level basketball experience (Ex. College Player, Manager, GA, etc.) required.
- High proficiency in SQL; demonstrating a strong command over SQL queries, with the ability to retrieve, manipulate, and transform data from relational databases required.
- Well versed in Python and R required.
- Previous experience using and interacting with a variety of data warehouse solutions, including Snowflake required.
- Passion for the NBA and basketball as a whole required.
- Familiarity with publicly available basketball analytics work required.
- Knowledge of latest Skill Acquisition Research and Practice a plus.
- Ability to work all Magic home games plus a select number of non-Magic events. This includes the ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends and be on-call as necessary based on the changing priorities of the department.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office products and other related computer skills required.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to meet tight deadlines, time management skills and attention to detail required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on business writing skills.
- Ability to work independently without supervision, be self-directed and demonstrate initiative.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others whom you have no direct authority over.
- Exhibit good judgment and decision-making skills.
