The Purpose:

Reporting to the Head of Sports Medicine, the Hybrid Club Doctor will support the Senior Doctors for the Manchester United’s Academy, Women’s Team (Professional & Developmental), and First Team, providing exceptional care to our elite athletes.

The Role:

  • Support the Senior Women’s Team Doctor, Senior First Team Doctor, and Senior Academy Doctor.
  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage player injuries.
  • Handle daily medical issues and presentations in the medical and physiotherapy room.
  • Use ultrasound confidently for monitoring injuries.
  • Provide pitch-side cover at Carrington training ground for training sessions and occasionally serve as the tunnel doctor at Old Trafford.
  • Manage and follow up on referrals to specialists and consultants outside the club.
  • Attend match days and tours, occasionally working unsociable hours.
  • Provide medical support and cover for Academy, First team, and Women’s Team matches.
  • Liaise effectively with the Head Physiotherapist and Physiotherapy teams.
  • Coordinate with Football Management and Support staff.
  • Adhere to Clinical Governance processes in player healthcare matters in accordance with UK professional practice standards.
  • Undertake any other duties or projects as directed by the Head of Sports Medicine or Senior First Team Doctors.
  • Play an instrumental role in developing protocols for specific areas such as concussion and emergency action plans at Carrington training ground and the stadium.
  • Attend player clinic appointments for operations, interventions, and examinations both in the UK and abroad.
  • Record all clinical notes on the athlete medical system and audit the use of medication at the club.
  • Contribute to and develop governance practices around the training ground.
  • Provide guidance and support regarding doping regulations and whereabouts for the relevant teams.

The Person:

  • Proven experience in general medical practice and sports medicine.
  • Extensive experience providing medical services to elite sports teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines.
  • High standards of accuracy and quality-driven.
  • Skilled at integrating into a multidisciplinary medical team and liaising with administrative and player support departments.
  • Effective communicator, ensuring alignment on medical decisions across departments.
  • Methodical with strong planning and organisational skills; maintains discretion at all times.
  • Strong work ethic with a positive, energetic, and proactive attitude; solution-oriented.
  • Calm and measured under pressure.
  • Flexible and adaptable, thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Resilient in high-pressure situations and adept at making difficult decisions.
  • Takes responsibility and resolves issues effectively and swiftly.
  • Proficient in computer use, familiar with Microsoft Office or similar software.
