Overview

Writer will assist in providing content for the Columbus Blue Jackets digital space including the team website and social media channels. Using assets and guidance provided by the team Reporter, the Journalism Intern will gain valuable professional experience covering a professional sports organization’s activities both on and off the ice. This individual will contribute content for the team’s digital offerings while helping tell the organization’s story and learning the ropes when it comes to covering a professional sports team.


Duties and tasks

  • Assist in producing and capturing content for BlueJackets.com and club social media platforms.
  • Work in conjunction with the Team Reporter on the creation of content ideas and how to best execute them.
  • Learn how to use social media platforms and multimedia avenues to enhance team coverage.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant parties such as public relations and the Blue Jackets Foundation to help produce high-quality content regarding the team's performance on the ice and its work in the community.
  • Become familiar with website and social media metrics to identify which content is successful.
  • Work to create good fan experiences on digital platforms through creative content.
  • Stay up to date on the best digital trends and practices.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain valuable journalism experience covering a professional hockey team.
  • Learn how different types of storytelling can engage a sports audience.
  • Gain experience in covering a sports team through various digital channels.

Intern Specifics

  • College credit is available.
  • 10-15 intern office hours available each week and 5-10 game hours available each week.
  • Internship Timeline- September – End of the Season.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in college (journalism or communications major strongly preferred).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Working knowledge of the National Hockey League (NHL), specifically the Columbus Blue Jackets.
  • Working knowledge of different social media platforms.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and have strong organizational skills.
  • Must have excellent grammar and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
