The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of facility maintenance and operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable functionality of all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and structural components. This role requires a strategic leader with strong technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to lead a team of engineers and trades professionals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance:
· Oversee all maintenance activities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, and the building envelope.
· Perform both corrective and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal facility performance.
· Develop and maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance inspections and maintenance needs.
Fire & Life Safety Oversight:
· Ensure all fire protection and life safety systems (fire alarms, sprinklers, suppression systems, emergency lighting, etc.) are regularly inspected, tested, and maintained in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
· Coordinate fire and life safety training for staff and ensure emergency procedures are up to date.
· Work with local fire marshals, inspectors, and authorities to maintain compliance and address any deficiencies.
Vertical Transportation Management:
· Oversee the maintenance and operation of all vertical transportation systems, including elevators, escalators, and lifts.
· Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and coordinate routine inspections and servicing with certified vendors.
· Address any operational issues promptly to minimize downtime and ensure safe and efficient transport for staff and guests.
Team Leadership & Development:
· Select, train, manage, and evaluate the engineering team.
· Provide ongoing training and mentorship to staff, addressing any performance gaps.
Project & Budget Management:
· Assist in managing capital improvement projects, infrastructure upgrades, and equipment replacements.
· Monitor and approve expenditures, ensuring alignment with the Operations budget.
· Order and maintain necessary maintenance supplies within budget guidelines.
Contractor & Vendor Coordination:
· Oversee and coordinate the work of external contractors, engineers, and architects.
· Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and building codes.
Safety & Compliance:
· Maintain hazardous materials communication programs, safety data sheets, and required records/permits.
· Stay up to date with Federal, State, and Local regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and Maryland Building Code.
Additional Responsibilities:
· Assist in facility emergency response planning and risk management initiatives.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Operations.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience:
· 5–7 years of progressive experience in facility operations management, preferably in a sports venue, convention center, or multi-purpose public assembly facility.
· Experience leading a team of engineers or skilled trades professionals.
· Prior property management experience is a plus.
Education & Certifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in facility management, business management, hospitality management, or a related field preferred.
· Electrical, HVAC, or plumbing license required.
· Specialized training in HVAC, plumbing, boiler equipment, lighting systems, electrical, and related building systems.
· Certifications in fire and life safety (e.g., NFPA certifications) and elevator/escalator maintenance knowledge are a plus.
Technical Knowledge:
· Strong understanding of building automation systems (BMS).
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams.
· Knowledge of OSHA standards, NFPA regulations, NEC codes, and risk management procedures.

· Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
· Must be available for on-call, after-hours, weekends, and holiday work in a 24/7 environment.
· Ability to climb stairs, lift up to 40 lbs. unaided, and work in physically demanding conditions.
