Pay Range: The pay range for this role is $25.88 - $31.54/hour


Actual base pay will be determined based on permissible factors such as transferable skills, work experience, market demands and primary work location. The base pay range provided is subject to change and may be modified in the future.


Position Overview

The Community Relations Coordinator oversees key programs that are critical to community initiatives and fan development goals of the San Jose Sharks with a specific focus on educational school programming and community initiatives. Under the direction of the Manager, Community Relations this role will be responsible for the planning and day-to-day execution of Community Relations programs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day execution of the Reading Is Cool program, including school visits with S.J. Sharkie
  • Plan and execute the San Jose Sharks Anti-Bullying Assembly Program presented by Kaiser Permanente
  • Oversee the FINancials Junior GM program presented by Comerica Bank
  • Oversee the Sharks Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team (BAASST) program presented by Chegg including database management, application preparation and review, communication with college counselors, hosting the Sharks BAASST night, etc.
  • Manage online donation platform for in-kind donations and internal requests
  • Assist in the execution of large community events including Special Olympics Floor Hockey, Hockey Is For Everyone, Pride night, Hospital Visits, Holiday Events, Female Ambassador Grants and other various events while working with cross-functional teams to increase impact
  • Assist with the planning and execution of league wide programs/initiatives and campaign months including Hockey Is For Everyone, monthly inclusion campaigns, Zebras Care, etc.
  • Assist with team autograph signings and set up
  • Execute game day duties as needed including Pride night, Top Reader night, Sharks BAASST night, hosting community groups, player driven initiatives, meet and greets, and various other duties as assigned
  • Grow and expand Community Relations initiatives and programs with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and belonging; develop new and creative ideas to expand reach and impact of new and existing initiatives/programming
  • Written communication: craft in-game copy points, articles for the Sharks Community Newsletter, social media captions and other written marketing and recap materials, posting on @SJSCommunity social channels may be required
  • Handle fan mail including fan packs, Eagle Scout letters, etc.
  • Perform other tasks and projects as requested by the Manager, Community Relations


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable professional and/or educational experience
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ work experience in community relations, foundation, non-profit, sports or education preferred
  • Professionalism when working with athletes, alumni or other VIPs
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and juggle numerous priorities and projects and to meet deadlines without sacrificing effectiveness/quality of work
  • Excellent communication skills including interpersonal, written, and public speaking
  • Maintain a public image consistent with “role model” status
  • Clean DMV record, valid driver’s license and ability to pass a standard background examination
  • Establish and maintain rapport within and outside of the organization
  • Ability to provide administrative, financial, and logistical support to meet department goals and objectives while maintaining responsibility for key projects as assigned by the Manager
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and juggle numerous priorities and projects and to meet deadlines without sacrificing effectiveness/quality of work
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other departments and employees
  • High degree of creativity and/or originality as it pertains to taking a program from idea to execution using strategy
  • Excellent computer skills; proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand and utilize a computer for extended periods of time
  • Communicate via phone and email with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to bend at the waist, reach overhead and lift up to 30 lbs. with or without accommodation
  • Physically navigate stairs at SSE facilities during normal work hours and events with or without accommodation
  • Ability to work flexible hours and occasional extended hours including nights, weekends, holidays (all with advance notice)
  • May be required to travel to other company locations
  • May be required to attend conferences, events, and training sessions within Bay Area or in or out-of-state locations
