Role
The Corporate Counsel will support the Deputy General Counsel and Vice President, General Counsel in serving the legal needs of The Phillies, a Major League Baseball organization that operates the Philadelphia Phillies and Citizens Bank Park, and its subsidiary Phillies Florida LLC, a Minor League Baseball organization that operates the Clearwater Threshers and BayCare Ballpark. This is a mid-level, in-house generalist position that will require the candidate to work and advise in all areas of law that touch on the business of The Phillies and Phillies Florida LLC (i.e., Commercial Contracts, Intellectual Property, Corporate, Privacy and Data Security, Litigation, Immigration, Insurance, Labor & Employment, Worker’s Compensation, etc.).
The ideal candidate for this position will have 4-7 years of relevant legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house. The candidate will be able to contribute and perform substantive work independently on day one, and will also be a fast learner, self-motivated, disciplined and strategic, with the ability to be nimble and productive in the face of shifting priorities and a heavy workload. The candidate will consistently deliver excellent work and sound advice and will have the technical and interpersonal skills to develop trusted business partner relationships. The candidate will have strong organizational skills and will be expected to perform certain administrative functions commensurate with a small legal department.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, negotiate and interpret a wide variety of agreements with commercial vendors, corporate sponsors, suite and premium ticket holders, software licensors, information technology vendors, non-baseball event promoters, hotels, consultants and other business service providers.
- Draft, review and manage waivers and releases for events, indemnification and insurance agreements and confidentiality agreements.
- Work with Human Resources to oversee efficient administration of Workers Compensation claims, including California cumulative trauma claims.
- Review and revise official rules for sweepstakes, contests and other promotions.
- Manage insurance compliance, including prompt claims reporting, and organization of case files.
- Assist in managing active litigation, including but not limited to insured general liability claims.
- Assist in protecting, licensing and use of trademarks and other intellectual property.
- Develop thorough understanding of and advise on agreements and documents related to the ballpark lease, ticketing, media rights, concessions, facility maintenance, the Phillies Urban Youth Academy and others.
- Develop thorough understanding of applicable laws, MLB agreements, rules and regulations, legal trends and new developments to ensure The Phillies’ policies and procedures align with best practices and achieve compliance in a changing legal/regulatory environment.
- Provide legal advice and assistance regarding compliance with labor and employment issues and compliance with all federal, state and local labor and employment laws.
- Provide legal advice and assistance, in consultation with local counsel, regarding operations at The Phillies’ academy in the Dominican Republic and international scouts.
- Work with and advise The Phillies’ Minor League affiliates (Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Reading Fightin Phils, Jersey Shore BlueClaws and Clearwater Threshers) on compliance with applicable laws and MLB rules and regulations.
- Strategize with the Legal Department to find innovative solutions to continually improve department function.
- Other duties and long-term projects, as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel and Vice President, General Counsel.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school with a record of superior achievement
- Licensed and in good standing, or will become licensed, to practice law in Pennsylvania
- 4-7 years of relevant legal experience
- Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating various types of contracts
- Experience, or a sincere desire to develop expertise in, software licensing; data privacy, security and ownership; and intellectual property protection matters
- Experience with project management, strategic thinking, and creation of processes designed to make workflows more efficient
- Sound business judgment
- Strong ability to analyze complex issues and provide practical, business-first solutions
- Adept in managing multiple projects and shifting deadlines
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize workload
- High level of personal integrity and professional ethics
Preferred Skills
- Experience in the sports industry
- Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken)
Salary
The Corporate Counsel’s salary will be commensurate with a mid-level in-house role.
