Sports Communication & Medical Safety Specialist

Essential Functions and Job Summary

This position is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of health and safety (H&S) protocols, ensuring compliance with internal NBA standards across the NBA's global portfolio, including programming and events across all NBA and Affiliate leagues. Additionally, this position will generate and implement the global communications plans and strategies for the Medical Operations Department.

Major Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of medical protocols for employees, staff and NBA stakeholders domestically and internationally
  • Coordinate and lead medical H&S protocol compliance (including audits) for domestic and global NBA events to ensure H&S plans for events are submitted and meet internal NBA standards
  • Contribute to the maintenance of cardiac screening compliance for organizers and participants at NBA events and youth programming that involves on-court basketball activity, along with auditing the development of and compliance with Emergency Action Response plans
  • Serve as the medical lead for CPR and AED certification and compliance for NBA employees, organizing and facilitating CPR training for staff domestically and at regional offices in partnership with Human Resources
  • Generate and execute a communications plan for Event Medical needs internally across all NBA properties and externally with domestic and international partners
  • Oversee project management for the Medical Operations Department
  • Create and deliver educational and engaging materials across a wide range of audiences from lay persons to medical professionals
  • Monitor assigned key safety performance indicators and generate reports communicating key findings for stakeholders across the organization
  • Prepare presentation materials on health and safety topics that are clear, accurate, and have influence over NBA personnel and stakeholders – inclusive of creating reports, presentations, briefings and corrective action plans on programs as needed
  • Strategically engage with International Basketball Operations, Youth Safety, Risk Management, Regional Offices, and International Events personnel on H&S initiatives relating to programming and events
  • Leverage existing league and professional relationships with third-party expert organizations and other sports leagues to inform best practices and contribute to safety resources unique and specific to NBA programming and events
  • In collaboration with internal stakeholders, develop and administer education material for programming participants and staff, focusing on environmental safety and physical and mental well-being
  • Use analytical and problem-solving skills to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, prevent and control event safety hazards
  • Conduct literature reviews and collect, analyze and communicate findings for H&S related department data, including for the Event Medical program

Required Education/Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Graduate or doctorate degree in Law, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Physiotherapy preferred
  • Minimum 7+ years of work experience with Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards in industrial operations and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Skills/Knowledge Attributes

  • Familiarity with epidemiologic, protocol, and/or policy development
  • Minimum of 5+ years of employee/internal communications and/or prior writing experience, including executive writing or ghostwriting
  • Experience performing medical/health literature searches and reviews
  • Up to date CPR, AED, and First Aid certification
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of the game of basketball
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and other technical software platforms and database management systems
  • Positive attitude, self-starter, and high emotional intelligence (EQ)
  • Strong proficiency in drafting and editing documents (including Excel files) and creating dynamic presentations using Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word)
  • Work Hours – Availability to work outside of normal or routine work hours
  • Project Management – Strong project management / organizational skills and high-level attention to detail; the ability to translate project briefs into operational reality and meet deadlines
  • Communication – Ability to clearly and succinctly synthesize and communicate ideas orally, in writing, and through visual presentations; outstanding proofreading and editing acumen related to medical/health topics
  • Commitment – Ability to drive high standards for individual, team, and organizational accomplishment; tenaciously working to meet or exceed challenging goals; deriving satisfaction from goal achievement and continuous improvement

Salary Range: $155,000 - $180,000
