JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Head Groundskeeper role is to assist the Head Groundskeeper in the day-to-day maintenance of baseball fields, practice areas and other common areas at both Ed Smith Complex and Buck O’Neil Baseball Complex (BOBC). This role is located in Sarasota, Florida.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Assists in planning, supervising, and executing the maintenance of baseball fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces) and common areas with regards to safety, playability, and aesthetics.
- Performs and supervises staff in tasks including mowing, edging, infield clay work, mound/home plate repair, tarp pulls, batting practice set-up and break-down, and pre/post game preparation and repair.
- Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowers and other equipment.
- Performs chemical applications and operates/calibrates chemical application equipment.
- Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
- Collaborate with Sr. Manager, Field Operations to schedule and supervise maintenance work through CMMS systems to achieve the most efficient utilization of crew and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective communication.
- Assists in Grounds Crew personnel management as assigned by the Sr. Manager, Field Operations, including recruiting, hiring, training, day-to-day scheduling and management, time review, assisting in disciplinary processes, regularly directing employee’s work, and evaluation.
- Supervise and participate in planning, setup, teardown of special events including youth baseball tournaments, camps/clinics, fantasy camps, concerts, charity events, and team organized on field events.
- Fulfills the responsibilities of the Manager, Grounds in the absence of the Manager, Grounds.
- Helps ensure proper safety procedures including OSHA requirements are followed by all Grounds Crew personnel.
- Assists with maintenance of all batting cages and the Grounds Crew shop and storage buildings.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- The preferred candidate will have a two- or four-year degree in turfgrass related studies, or equivalent experience and education and desire to produce highest quality field and turf product.
- Ability to monitor, report and resolve field issues such as turf stress, disease, pest management, irrigation issues
- Independently perform turf maintenance practices such as fertilizing, spraying, topdressing, aerifying, etc…
- Oversee small field projects performed at Ed Smith and Twin Lakes Complexes such as laser grading, fraise mowing, sod renovations, and small landscape projects
- Communicate with coaches and staff regarding daily workout/practice/game schedules and inclement weather conditions
- Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields, landscape, and common areas. Prior professional baseball field management experience preferred.
- High level of understanding of the sports requirements for field layouts and markings.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Candidate must be a professional, self-starter who will work as a team player and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others. Supervisory experience, at least three years preferred.
- Able to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License and excellent driving record.
- Must have a current Florida Commercial Pesticide and Fertilizer Applications License or could obtain it within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
