SUMMARY:

This full-time, at-will position will report to the Director of Fields and Grounds & the Fields – RSLTA. Under his supervision, the First Assistant Superintendent participates in the maintenance of the five natural grass fields, Zions Bank Stadium, 2 full-size indoor artificial fields, common grounds maintenance, and related work as required. The First Assistant will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and will help supervise 2 other full-time workers and 4 part-time workers. He/she typically conducts maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment used in the field of Turfgrass Management. They will monitor moisture levels, hand water, mow, aerate, fertilize, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Supervises the day-to-day maintenance of all fields at Zions Bank Real Academy.
  • Leads a crew of 3 full-time employees and up to 4 part-time employees in all aspects of athletic field maintenance, facility grounds maintenance, and equipment maintenance.
  • Participates in the maintenance of the five natural grass fields, Zions Bank Stadium, 2 full size indoor artificial fields, common grounds maintenance, and related work as required.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment used on the field.
  • Monitors moisture levels, hand water, mows, and fertilizes fields.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields; the seeding, sodding, and maintenance practices for sports field turfgrass; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners, herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.
  • High level of understanding of the sports governing bodies’ requirements for field layouts and markings.
  • Sports field maintenance labor includes:
    • Kentucky Bluegrass maintenance
    • Sod cutting and installation
    • Irrigation management – Toro Sentinel experience preferred but not required
    • Mowing, trimming, and use of blowers
    • Fertilizing with a walk-behind fertilizer and Lely spreader
    • Field markings and logo painting for soccer, football, rugby, lacrosse, etc
    • Maintenance of artificial turf surfaces
  • Understanding of Kentucky bluegrass maintenance.
  • Understanding of fertilizer application and calculations.
  • Able to manage, motivate, and train staff.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and excellent driving record
  • Able to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Operating and maintaining power equipment such as:
    • Reel and Rotary mowers
    • Tractors, Top dressers, Aerators
    • Utility vehicles
    • Backpack Blowers
    • Trimmers

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The job requires regularly lifting/pushing up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting/pushing more than 50 pounds or exerting heavy force, in a wide disparity or environmental conditions. The job involves standing, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, etc.
