Position Overview:
The Information Security Intern will play a role in helping to continually improve our Information Security posture and to protect our systems and data. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Technology Department in the resolution of information security ticket requests, while gaining hands-on experience in an operational setting. The candidate should be adaptable and possess good customer service and verbal communication skills and develop trustworthy and reliable relationships with employees. They will combine these skills with their technical ability and a willingness to learn and function as part of a team to successfully execute their job functions. Organizational skills, attention to detail, time/priority management, and self-motivation are also vital for success in this role. In this capacity, the Technology Department will assist the intern in learning new technical skills and how to best operate as a successful member of the larger Penguins organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in Security Monitoring: Support the team in monitoring and analyzing security events and alerts to identify potential threats or vulnerabilities
  • Conduct Vulnerability Assessments: Help in performing vulnerability scans/assessments and assist in documenting and prioritizing identified issues.
  • Support Incident Response: As requested, participate in incident response activities, including data collection, analysis, and documentation of security incidents
  • Review Security Policies: Assist in reviewing and updating security policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Help with Security Awareness: Contribute to the development of security awareness training.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research on emerging threats and security technologies.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with the Technology Department and other Business Departments to ensure that best practices are implemented and followed.
  • Assist with Compliance: Support the team in maintaining compliance with relevant regulations and standards, such as GDPR, HIPAA, and/or PCI-DSS.


Qualifications:

  • Education: Currently pursuing a degree in Information Security or Cybersecurity.
  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of information security principles, network protocols, and security technologies (e.g. firewalls, antivirus, and IDS/IPS)
  • Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Tools: Familiarity with common security tools and software (e.g. SIEM, vulnerability scanners) is a plus.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present findings.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ethics: Strong understanding of the importance of confidentiality and ethical behavior in handling sensitive information.
