Football Communications Manager (women’s)

The Purpose:

Reporting to the Director of Football Communications, this fast-paced role will lead all communications activity around our women’s team and women’s Academy. Core responsibilities include the delivery of access to media rightsholders, club media and other media partners, and the managing of relationships and information flows between the women’s team and wider media. The successful candidate will also be expected to work closely with the corporate comms and club media teams, and commercial colleagues to help grow support for the women’s team, and to showcase the club’s strategic commitment to building a strong position in the women’s game. For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity to help elevate the storytelling we do around our women players and staff, and to play a key role in managing the narrative around our women’s team and women’s Academy, contributing to success on the pitch.

The Role:

  • Leading the development and delivery of an effective communications strategy for our women’s team and the club’s position within the women’s game.
  • Effectively delivering rights to media partners and club media, and discretionary access to non-rightsholders (including the arrangement and staging of interviews and press conferences).
  • Effectively managing media, communications and PR activity around women players and football staff.
  • Developing and delivering key messages for media and other stakeholders.
  • Cultivating and managing relations with the media and other stakeholders.
  • Drafting of written materials, including press releases, articles, and messaging.
  • Close co-operation with our content and commercial teams and Manchester United Foundation, ensuring that all media and PR activity around our women’s team is aligned with the communications strategy.
  • Close co-operation with the wider football comms team to ensure alignment in strategies and narratives.


The Person:

  • Relevant professional experience in communications, public relations and/or media; prior experience in an elite sporting environment a strong advantage.
  • Excellent abilities in written and verbal communications, with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent knowledge of the sports media landscape; knowledge of and passion for women’s football an advantage.
  • Experience of media and social media monitoring.
  • Experience of arranging and managing media-facing events an advantage.
  • Ability to work and collaborate across departments in a complex organisation, and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders at all levels, including players, coaches, technical staff, and senior leaders.
  • High standards, strong work ethic, resilience, and a positive and collaborative mindset all essential.
