Summary/Objective:

The Houston Astros are currently seeking an analyst in the Performance Sciences Department. Serving at the Astros West Palm Beach Complex, the Performance Science Analyst will work in conjunction with our Manager of Performance Science to conduct research and analysis, integrate insights across the organization and build and optimize tools and reports.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Work throughout the data analysis pipeline (data collection, download, filtering, modeling, and interpretation) for all performance science related projects.
  • Develop, maintain, and debug code for Astros performance science platforms.
  • Help develop/improve data collection protocols for current and new assessments.
  • Identify best practices to report current data and results from assessments.
  • Support the design and rollout of educational resources for staff and players.
  • Collaborate with baseball coaches to connect sport science and S&C to on field performance.
  • Monitor athlete compliance and adherence to proposed monitoring timelines throughout the season.
  • Provide staff training regarding the use of various technologies.
  • Help evaluate new technologies and assessments.
  • Support the roll-out of new technology.
  • Technology management and troubleshooting.
  • Utilize all relevant information across departments to align player goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience & Skills:

Required

  • Programming experience in R (and shiny framework).
  • Experience with SQL
  • Basic Statistical knowledge (pre-post, regression, classification, etc).
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into simple terms for coaches and players.
  • Understanding of how to use main performance technologies.
  • Understanding of common S&C training principles

Preferred

  • Experience with Bayesian Statistics
  • Proficiency in Python, as well as R
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Collegiate or Professional playing experience
  • Previous experience in sport

Work Environment

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and hours of work will vary with the season. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Travel:

Travel to minor league affiliates is expected for this position. (Sugar Land, TX; Corpus Christi, TX; Asheville, NC; Fayetteville, NC).
