The Manager, Communications will fill a key, front-facing role with media. Candidate will field and respond to press inquiries, dealing with all media. The role will share responsibility with both the credentialing process and for coordinating pregame and off-day media interviews.

Strong relationships with the media, clubhouse personnel and across all internal departments are a priority, fueling the ability to pitch and place stories and interviews across platforms. Demonstrated writing/editing skills to fulfill department needs are essential.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Direct interaction with media

  • Manage requests from a wide array of domestic and international media across platforms
  • Lead Asian media outreach, coordinating with internal departments for precise media plans.
  • Work with department leads and stadium operations in securing room and logistics for news conferences and team announcements
  • Ability to service all aspects of the press box during pregame, including seating charts, supplies and general media needs
  • Ability to assist in coordinating news conferences and special interviews
  • Responsible for generating lineup sheets for distribution to media.

Story pitching

  • Support a proactive approach for pitching feature story ideas to sports and non-sports media, including newspaper, magazine, radio, television and internet outlets
  • Foster awareness for the club’s strong community ties and other off-the-field endeavors.

Writing and editing

  • Write and edit press releases.
  • Write and edit pregame and postgame notes
  • Write and edit material for the annual media guide and various print publications
  • Help develop storytelling ideas for marketing, video and social media as needed.

Organization

  • Able to handle multiple tasks and organize and prioritize workload efficiently.
  • Employ fail-safe system for responding to internal and external needs and requests.
  • Able to pay careful attention to detail is critical.
  • Experience working in a setting where long, non-standard hours are the norm.
  • Able to work independently while handling details and meeting deadlines.

Additional responsibilities

  • Participate in the organization’s ongoing strategic communications planning
  • Able to upload materials to MLB Pressbox
  • Liaison with visiting PR departments

Travel

  • Ability to travel to Spring Training and perform media relations duties during that time.
  • Experience/ability to fulfill PR assignments on road trips.
  • Understand proper decorum as participant and team representative on road trips.

Basic Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Bilingual in Japanese and English
  • At least three years of Public Relations experience with time spent proactively working with the media
  • Strong knowledge of the game of baseball and previous work in the game, particularly with a team).
  • Strong writing skills at a level for minimal editing
  • Experience with professional sports team is preferred
  • Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, InDesign)
  • Excellent verbal communications skills
  • Collaborative and collegial in work environment.
