Performance Insights Lead

We have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Liverpool FC team as a Performance Insights Lead within our Research Department. In this varied role, you will provide the relevant data in a centralised and accessible way to the medical, fitness, and sports science teams. This will include surfacing and analysing match, training, and testing data.

What will you be doing?

  • Collaborate closely with fitness, medical, and sports science teams throughout the club.
  • Work within the Research Department and with our team of software engineers.
  • Supervise a Ph.D. student on performance related projects.

Deliverables:

  • Performance Data Management: work with our data engineers to warehouse and ensure data quality for match, training, testing, and wellness data across the First Team, U23 Team, and Academy.
  • Performance Monitoring: create and maintain dashboards that allow practitioners to easily access performance data.
  • Performance Improvement: monitor areas that performance could be improved and work with individual development staff to propose interventions that can maximise available talent.
  • Research Questions: conduct and supervise research on long term research goals.

Who are we looking for?

To be successful in this role, you will have an educational background in a STEM field with a minimum of bachelor’s degree in STEM subject and ideally a Masters/Ph.D. in Statistics, biomechanics, or related discipline. You will have a scientific mindset and approach to problem solving. You will be proficient in data analysis and statistical modelling preferably with knowledge of Python or R. You will have proven experience with data management and storage; SQL or other relational database strongly preferred to Excel. You will have an excellent understanding of performance monitoring technologies such as GPS, optical player tracking, heart-rate monitoring, etc…and datasets derived from them. You’ll be proficiency in data visualisation and communication of performance data ideally in a sporting context.

You will have strong communication skills with the ability to build strong working relationships across a variety of teams. It is essential that you have a flexible and dedicated approach to work, enabling certain tasks/demands to be conducted during unsociable hours. Being self-motivated, you are comfortable working independently or within a team. You can work reliably under pressure meeting tight deadlines and adhere to strict processes whilst maintaining high standards and confidentiality.

This is a full-time permanent role working 35 hours per week on a flexible 5 from 7 days basis including evenings and weekends. Your main base will be our AXA Training Ground in Kirkby. The possibility for hybrid work will be considered.
