Overview: The Houston Texans are committed to moving the organization in a new and innovative direction. In 2019, the medical and performance departments aligned to optimize the support provided to the players within the Houston Texans organization. The Houston Texans Sports Performance Department will treat all of our players as β€œNFLers” delivering the highest quality of medical and performance services to all, fostering deep, caring relationships as we innovate, grow and learn to keep players safe and transform talent into excellence. The ambition of the department is to establish a new level of player care and performance innovation within US Professional Sport.

Sports Science backed interventions and Performance Data are crucial underpinnings to athletic performance and availability. Our performance methodology seeks to maximize athletic development and create a transferrable impact on Football performance while reducing the likelihood of injury. By utilizing objective measures within a process-driven system, we will best prepare our players for competition and recovery from injury. The General Manager is committed to this appointment and are determined to install an individual to drive the team forward.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Iterate upon a progressive, football-specific performance program to improve athletic development and on-field performance
  • Day-to-day support and coordination of all sport-science related tasks including monitoring, assessing, reporting, and researching for performance and recovery purposes
  • Preparation and interpretation of the data: digital input of the data into the system and evaluation of the data
  • State of the art: evaluation of test methods and test procedures, optimization of the test equipment, orientation on sports science findings, prepare a separate database for standard values of different positions
  • Additional data collection as required by the Director of Sports Science
  • Providing evidence-based literature reviews / analysis for the Director of Sports Science
  • Establish close working and professional relationships with the Sports Performance Team staff
  • Provide a high quality, professional and thorough service across all aspects of your general responsibilities
  • Complete all specific tasks delegated to you by the Director of Sports Science or other Sports Performance Team leadership team member in a timely and efficient manner
  • Provide education β€œin-services” as required on topics suggested by the Director of Sports Science, including at least one presentation on the views of an external professional in a field of interest to the group (or alternatively bring that expert in to present directly)
  • Provide regular updates on journal articles of interest to the group
  • Provide summaries of relevant information to the group on any conferences or courses attended
  • Maintain a record of Continuing Professional Development
  • Raise any areas of potential grievance or opportunity with the manager at the earliest possible stage
  • Maintain suitable levels of personal fitness appropriate for the physical nature of this role

Subject to reasonable accommodations, position requires routine face-to-face personal interaction with other Club personnel; therefore, job responsibilities must be physically performed in the Club offices and not in a telecommuting manner.

Education/Experience:

  • Masters degree in sports science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, epidemiology, statistics, or related discipline
  • Minimum of 1- 3 years of professional experience
  • Competent in statistics, research evaluation, and technology. Certification in one or more data science and statistics credentials (e.g., CAP, ABDE, ABDA)
  • Certification in one or more recognized sport performance credentials (e.g., CPSS, CSCS) is preferred
  • Highly experienced with a variety of health and performance technologies
  • Experience in working with health and performance data is preferred
  • Experience using athlete management systems to ensure the secure and efficient storage of monitoring and evaluation data. Experience using Microsoft Power BI preferred.
