Part-Time Research & Development Analyst

Classification: Part-Time/Non-Exempt (TEMP)

Summary/Objective:

The role of a Houston Astroโ€™s part-time analyst is designed to supplement the technical work output of the Research & Development analyst group. This includes taking on ad-hoc projects on request, contributing to ongoing work, and presenting possible new pathways for research. Relevant projects will include (but are not limited to) mechanical/physical models of baseball interactions, biomechanical models of movement, and statistical models of baseball performance.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Work with analyst team to push forward research projects.
  • Use expertise to promote new ideas and solutions for research projects.
  • Document and present work to wider baseball operations department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in one or more unique technical domains such as computer-vision, statistical modelling, signal processing, mechanical modelling, etc.
  • Proficiency in one or more computational toolset (Python preferred but not required).
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new workflows and integrate to a new technical environment.
  • Ability to document and present on technical work to a mixed audience of technical and non-technical people.
  • Record of original research (publications, conference presentations, etc.)
  • Advanced degree in technical field such as Physics, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, etc.
  • PhD in relevant field (Biomechanics, Physics, etc.) is preferred.
  • Interest/Passion for baseball and human performance is preferred.

Work Environment

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Along with the potential for tasks in baseball specific training environments and set-up and use of measurement devices within.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, and carry up to 40lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position with the expectation of 5-15 hours a week.

Travel

This role may include occasional travel.
