The Detroit Lions are partnering with the non-profit, Strength in Numbers, to create a Detroit Lions Analytics Mentorship Program designed to offer underrepresented students that attend Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, University of Michigan Dearborn, and North Carolina A&T an opportunity to get hands on experience in the sports analytics industry. Students selected in this 3-month program will have one or two projects assigned to them over the course of the program from the Detroit Lions Football Information Department. Students that complete the program will receive a $500 stipend. A total of 6-8 students will be selected. The program will begin in the Fall ’23 semester (October).

Students who are interested in applying for the Detroit Lions Analytics Mentorship Program must submit all required materials below. Applications will be open until mid September. Note: Students will not receive credit hours for completing this program.

Analysis Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Familiarity with statistical programming in Python and/or R
  • Familiarity with, or curiosity about, data visualization
  • Interest in or curiosity about football

Software Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Familiarity with programming languages, such as Python, Javascript, C#
  • Familiarity with, or curiosity about, database technologies
  • Interest in or curiosity about football
