The Role of 1st Team Physiotherapist

This new role will work closely with medical department colleagues and others to provide performance and/or rehabilitation services to the 1st Team squad.

Main Accountabilities

Performance Therapy and Rehabilitation

  1. Under the guidance of the Head Physiotherapist, provide performance and/or rehabilitation services to members of the 1st Team playing squad. Responsibilities may vary dependant on the skillset of the successful candidate.
  1. Support medical staff in the initial assessment and management of 1st Team squad as required.
  1. Assist medical staff to review and update current processes with regards to injury management and RTP.
  1. Link injury management to the requirements of the performance department, ensuring that injured players work towards performance criteria.
  1. Ensure that accurate medical records are maintained for the delivery of all player treatments/rehabilitation/interventions.
  1. Responsible for collecting accurate internal and external injury audit data in conjunction with medical staff.

Injury Prevention/Performance Optimisation

  1. Support the departments’ regular weekly screening programme and focus on areas that we can positively affect in the short-, medium- and long-term based upon injury trends.
  1. Develop and deliver a pre-season screening battery for baseline measurements of key RTP markers and key injury risk factors, supported by medical staff.
  1. In line with pre-season screening & weekly monitoring provide individualised pre/post training intervention for high-risk groups, supported by the medical staff.
  1. Formulate a link with the performance department to monitor players training & match volume via GPS and provide suitable interventions to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
  1. Assist the Performance Department to provide players with athletic development gym programmes to improve pitch based physical performance.
  1. Lead with the delivery of daily physical preparation sessions before training, focusing on both injury prevention and performance optimisation.

Medical Provision at Matches/Training/Tours

  1. This is predominantly a non-matchday role, although there may be requirement to support on matchdays and/or overseas tours dependent upon need.
  1. Assist in daily/weekly safety checks of emergency medical equipment before training.

Pre-signing Medicals/Medical Consultations

  1. May be required to accompany 1st Team players to medical consultations at short notice either in this country or abroad as required. Ensuring best practice is followed always and ensuring the player receives optimal care and advice.

Management Responsibilities

  1. To ensure that any concerns you observe, or are raised with you in your role, are shared with the Safeguarding Team through appropriate channels.
  1. Develop the ongoing and strong link between performance and medical departments, encouraging sharing of information and development of performance criteria.
  1. Attend relevant courses and conferences to research best practice and contribute to service development.

Person Specification - Essential Personal Characteristics

Undergraduate Degree in Physiotherapy

CSP/HCPC Registration

FA ITMMiF as minimum, with capacity to achieve ATMMiF

Minimum 5 years’ experience within professional sport (not specifically football)

Own transport and clean driving license

Ability to work in an interdisciplinary medicine and performance team

Excellent clinical reasoning skills

Excellent range of treatment and rehabilitation skills

Highly self-motivated with the ability to motivate others

Enthusiasm and a 'can do' approach to work

High work commitment with a ‘performance first’ mentality

Willing to self-evaluate and work towards continuous improvement

Highest standards of professional and personal conduct, especially confidentiality

Person Specification - Desirable Characteristics

Achieved, or working towards a Postgraduate Qualification in Sports Physiotherapy/Rehabilitation or an equivalent related field

A strong emphasis on the objective monitoring and rehabilitation of athletes within a team sport environment

Multisport experience or evidence of multi-sport CPD

Experience of developing and implementing innovative ideas and putting them into practice

An understanding of and commitment to fair play and all national and international anti-doping policies as per the Football Association and World Anti-Doping Association
