DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Information Technology department provides strategic direction and day-to-day IT operational, software and emerging technology supporting the Red Sox, Fenway Sports Management, the Red Sox Foundation, and FSG Real Estate. Responsibilities include support for corporate and ballpark infrastructure, systems architecture, networks, computer and auxiliary operations, desktop support, data and cyber security, and broadcast cabling and related infrastructure. Provides applications development and support for corporate systems, MLB Ballpark and fan engagement apps, and systems and data architecture.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Information Technology department is seeking a Cloud Engineer with deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Cloud Composer (Airflow), BigQuery, Snowflake, and dbt as well as a strong foundation in modern infrastructure and data engineering tools. The role focuses on supporting and advancing our data environment, application deployment, design and optimization of data pipelines, and observability integration to help monitor data flow and job completion.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partner with internal technical teams and external partners to shape data strategies, roadmaps, and the delivery of scalable cloud applications.
- Lead efforts in designing, integrating, and optimizing data pipelines using Airflow, dbt, and terraform.
- Establish and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines to automate application, data and infrastructure deployments.
- Provide Kubernetes expertise to deploy and manage containerized applications at scale in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
- Monitor and optimize GCP infrastructure for performance, scalability, observability, and cost-efficiency.
- Design and maintain cloud-native solutions leveraging Google Cloud APIs, cloud storage, and monitoring tools.
- Define and document best practices for application deployment, data pipeline orchestration, and infrastructure maintenance.
- Add and manage complex data sources in BigQuery and Snowflake to meet evolving business needs.
- The ideal candidate will collaborate with internal stakeholders, software engineers, and data teams to design, implement, and refine scalable cloud solutions, while providing architecture guidance, best practices, troubleshooting, and monitoring.
- Maintain and enhance the current BigQuery data warehouses, ensuring optimal performance and scalability. Assist with the migration of all or portions of our data warehouse from BigQuery to Snowflake.
CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years in cloud architecture, engineering, or data engineering roles.
- Extensive knowledge of GCP services such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Composer, and Kubernetes, with the ability to solve complex technical challenges.
- Proven experience with Airflow for workflow orchestration and dbt for data transformation and modeling.
- Hands-on expertise with Terraform for managing cloud resources through infrastructure as code.
- Strong skills in Python, SQL (BigQuery/Snowflake), and cloud architecture principles.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, and general DevOps practices.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with a strong engineering mindset.
- Ability to create and maintain clear, comprehensive technical documentation for engineering teams.
- Experience translating technical concepts into non-technical documentation for stakeholders, ensuring accessibility and clarity.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, communicate risks, and consistently meet deadlines.
- Experience working effectively with consulting partners and cross-functional technical teams using modern communications platforms
