The Purpose:

Overseeing and coordinating the day-to-day functions of the payroll processing team to guarantee punctual and precise payments to staff members. Providing assistance to the Head of Payroll as necessary. Emphasising ongoing enhancement of controls, protocols, and methodologies.

The Role:

  • Oversee and manage daily tasks of the processing team, including assigning, organising, and prioritising.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for resolving complex errors or complaints.
  • Assess team performance according to the Company’s performance review process.
  • Provide suggestions to the Head of Payroll and assist in creating and implementing new or updated policies, procedures, and controls to streamline payroll processing.
  • Ensure ongoing adherence to legislative requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Payroll to identify opportunities for improving computer operations, system efficiency, and response time.
  • Support projects and contribute to the development, testing, and implementation of system upgrades or enhancements, as needed.
  • Actively balance and reconcile HMRC submissions.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of payroll regulations, tax legislation, pension laws, and compliance.
  • Aid internal and external auditors by furnishing required documents, reports, and other payroll-related information, and implement recommended procedural changes.
  • Assume responsibility for overseeing the entire processing cycle of one or more company payrolls.
  • Address day-to-day queries promptly and professionally, projecting a positive image both internally and externally.
  • Play an active role in the payroll team, working towards continual improvement and enhancement of departmental functions.


The Person:

  • Proven experience in payroll processing, with a track record of successfully managing a small team.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and motivate team members to achieve their full potential.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritise and work to deadlines under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Excel.
  • Proactive approach with effective planning and organisational skills.
  • Team player with adaptability and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
