Job Title: Head Athletic Trainer, South Bay Lakers

Department: Basketball Operations

Reports to: General Manager, South Bay Lakers

Manages: Strength & Conditioning Trainer/ Massage Therapist/ Equipment Manager & Assistant Athletic Trainer

Position Summary: The primary responsibility of the Head Athletic Trainer for the South Bay Lakers is to manage all player athletic training from nutrition and injury prevention to injury evaluation and treatment. The Head Athletic Trainer will track all injuries and will keep necessary staff informed; ensuring players see the appropriate physician or specialty doctor and following up with medical staff. The secondary responsibility is to assist with team travel and ticket operations. The Head Athletic Trainer will collaborate with the LAL training staff regarding the overall welfare and medical treatment of NBA assigned players and two-way players.

Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities):

Athletic Training

  • Individual focus on player injury prevention, rehabilitation and general well-being
  • Conduct base movement screenings to identify any movement dysfunctions that could contribute to player injuries
  • Report and keep up-to-date records on all injuries
  • Maintain a personal chart, and add all information to electronic, league EMR
  • Track inventory of all athletic training medical supplies
  • Follow NBA G League pre-participation physical examination and all other league regulations
  • Represent SBL at League meetings
  • Coordinate team meals with team chef and order locker room snacks and beverages
  • Ensure meals meet nutritional goals
  • Provide select players with nutritional supplements
  • Work with physicians to create nutritional supplementation plan
  • Create all braces and casts needed
  • Schedule and coordinate transportation to doctors’ visits, dentist, or any medical treatment (e.g. mold for mouth guards, prescription pick up, etc.)

Education/ Certification:

  • Bachelors’ degree in athletic training (required) / Masters’ degree (preferred)
  • BOC certification
  • ATC Certification
  • First responder/CPR/AED certification for professional rescuer
  • CSCS preferred; DPT/Board Certified Physical Therapist

Previous experience: A minimum of two (2) years of work experience in athletic training on a contact sport. Experience working with a major college (Division 1A or 1B) or semi-professional basketball team preferred.

Technology Capabilities:

  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records
  • Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint & Windows)

Knowledge, skills, abilities:

  • Past experience with manual therapy
  • Strong rehabilitation experience/ skills
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
  • Exceptional on-scene problem solving – ability to make tough, quality decisions in a fast-paced and stressful environment
  • Great multi-tasker, with the ability to prioritize and simultaneously juggle multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to present the utmost professionalism and highest ethical code

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift a min of 50lbs. and walk significant distances on game days

Location: El Segundo (offices M-F and UHTC gymnasium for all SBL home games), all away games, and other off-site events (as needed)

Travel: Up to 50% of the time (approx. 26 away games)

The pay range for this role is $70,000 to $80,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and certifications
