JOB SUMMARY:
The Detroit Tigers are currently seeking a full-time Analyst in the Performance Science Department. This role will be responsible for performing analyses and conducting research using biomechanical data with a specific focus on pitching. This position will report to the Vice President, Performance Science.
Key Responsibilities:
Research, build, test and deploy statistical and/or machine learning models using pitching biomechanical data to support player development and decision making. Perform internal research integrating pitching biomechanics data with other data sources or performance data to improve current and build new evaluation and monitoring processes. Collaborate with Baseball Analytics to integrate pitcher biomechanical data into projection models and evaluations. Conduct quality assurance testing of all models and metrics before they are implemented into production. Complete ad hoc data queries as they relate to pitching and effectively present analysis using written reports and data visualizations. Develop applications and reports to increase efficiency in the delivery and integration of pitching related Performance Science data across the organization. Collaborate and communicate with various departments across the organization to support player development and evaluation efforts at all levels. Assist with the integration of Performance Science data into current databases, tools, and applications. Monitor, identify and recommend new or emerging techniques, technologies, models, and algorithms. Other projects as directed by the Vice President, Performance Science.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of pitching-specific performance science data such as biomechanical data, modern statistical techniques, and sabermetric analysis. Expertise with SQL and relational databases is required. Relevant work experience with statistical software (R or similar) and scripting languages such as Python. Experience working with large data sets preferred, including experience with biomechanical time-series data. Familiarity with cloud computing, cloud storage, and cloud services a plus. Demonstrated ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts to colleagues possessing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. Degree or equivalent experience in biomechanics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field. Self-starter. Team player. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as dictated by the baseball calendar. Willing and able to relocate to Lakeland, FL.
