Position Overview:
The Philadelphia Flyers are seeking a full-time Integrated Performance Analyst who will work within the Athlete Performance and Hockey Research & Development departments. The ideal candidate will have a combination of hockey specific domain knowledge as well as prior experience working in a player performance role. The primary objective of this role will be to extract and effectively communicate critical findings related to training, wellness, physical and on ice performance to the VP of Athlete Performance and Wellness as well as other key internal decision makers to ensure the organization is making timely and impactful decisions.
Essential Functions and Core Responsibilities:
- Lead the data collection, analysis, and predictive modeling process for all performance science related projects.
- Collaborate with the data engineering group in the acquisition and storage of all performance data to ensure data parity across all internal platforms.
- Design, build, and update all athlete management systems to ensure accurate and timely information is delivered to key stakeholders.
- Develop and test predictive models measuring off ice activities to in game performance.
- Create data visualizations and presentations that clearly communicate methodology and key findings.
- Create validated, reproducible, and automated reports for internal use.
- Identify internal innovation and research efforts related to new technology and methods.
- Support and contribute to the research and development department as directed.
- Contribute to the development, documentation, and maintenance of current internal data systems.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with coaches, players, performance, player development, and data analytics teams.
Preferred Skills:
- 2+ years working within an amateur, collegiate, or professional sports science or high-performance role.
- 2+ years using software for performing data analysis, machine learning, and software development.
- Demonstrated proficiency with R, Python, or comparable statistical scripting language.
- Experience with predictive modeling and machine learning.
- Experience with Cloud Computing (Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform).
- Experience analyzing large data sets using Databricks, Apache Spark, or similar big data tools.
- Ability to translate hockey tactics, concepts, and advanced terminology into code equivalents.
- Experience with data collection through API and JSON data.
- Experience with version control through Git.
- Experience building web applications and interactive data visualizations through use of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Shiny, PowerBI, Dash, Plotly, etc.
- Ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong ability to work independently, be self-directed and demonstrate initiative.
- Able and willing to work nights and weekends as required.
