OEG delivers leading sports, entertainment and other special event programming to fans and patrons in Canada and the United States. OEG owns the five-time Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers, the WHL’s three-time Memorial Cup Champion Edmonton Oil Kings, the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, and operates Rogers Place, the home of the Oilers and Oil Kings, located in ICE District, Canada’s largest mixed-used sports and entertainment development.
Role Summary:
Reporting to the President & GM, Hockey Operations – Edmonton Oil Kings, the Head Athletic Therapist will be responsible for the overall sports and player medical program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, coordinate and administer a sports medical program including:
- Develop and maintain an overall effective medical approach including; injury prevention, injury evaluation, injury management & rehabilitation, fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs for players, and;
- Coordinate and schedule physical examinations and medical referrals for players
- Maintain accurate and up to date records and documentation on all players
- Responsible for the assessment, treatment, prevention, documentation, and rehabilitation of acute, chronic, and emergency injuries and illnesses
- Responds immediately to acute injuries that occur during training sessions, practices and games
- Manages pre-season screening protocols such as reviewing medical history forms, neuro-cognitive baseline testing, injury prevention programming of warm-ups and cool downs
- Assess and report progress of recovering players to the President & GM, Hockey Operations – Edmonton Oil Kings, and Head Coach
- Arranges referrals to appropriate healthcare providers and manage US & Import player medical insurance claims.
- Works closely with Oil Kings Strength & Conditioning coaches to ensure that proper exercise modifications are being made for an injured player.
- Assist, when required, with the orderly movement and organization of all Oil Kings hockey equipment and supplies while travelling on Oil Kings road trips
- Assist, when required, in transportation to and from the airport with respect to player movements
- Foster a good working atmosphere for all Oil Kings staff and players in and around the Oil Kings dressing room and training facilities
- Function cooperatively with all other staff, coaches, and department personnel
- Use best efforts to promote interest and good will of the Oil Kings’ business
- Perform any other duties as directed by President & GM, Hockey Operations – Edmonton Oil Kings, and Head Coach
- Travel with the Oil Kings to provide game day support
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
- Certified Athletic Therapist and a member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association
- Previous experience in a sports/team, or hockey environment is preferred
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Responder or Equivalent certification as determined by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) considered an asset.
- Comfortable frequently working at a fast pace, with unscheduled interruptions and deadlines.
- Converse in a calm, friendly manner
- Ability to coordinate team of medical professionals including PT, Chiro, Strength Coach, Sports Med Physicians, Paramedics, Dentist, Nutritionist, Psychologist etc.
- Strong organizational skills
- Proven ability to work with others in an environment that requires quick decisions that protect the safety and well-being of the players.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Will travel to other work-related locations for games
- Valid Driver’s License
- Criminal Background reference check required
