JOB SUMMARY:
Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and it has been around for more than 150 years. One of the things that makes baseball unique is the way that the game is scored.
The Flying Tigers Official Scorer is a role that scores Florida State League games and relays all play-by-play for live box scores and record keeping.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Arrive at the ballpark 60 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. Collect rosters and other applicable information. Observe from the press box and keep a detailed scorecard of the game, focusing on every play that happens during a game, and to make judgment calls that affect the official record of said game. The official scorer files a report after each game for documentation purposes. Count the number of bases safely reached on each hit, tabulating the number of doubles, triples, and home runs. The scorer is also required to count the number of total bases reached by a player: a single counts for one base, a double for two, a triple for three, and a home run for four. Make all necessary scoring and pitching decisions (win, loss, save). Participate with in-season training when necessary and reasonably required.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Exceptional (and demonstrable) knowledge of the Official Baseball Rules, and especially Section 9 of Official Baseball Rules. Demonstrate good judgment on applicable plays requiring decisions. Attention to detail in keeping a scorecard and tracking game totals for each player and team. Demeanor to accept constructive criticism and instruction, and patience to deal with critique of performance from various parties (i.e. clubs, players). Collaborative spirit with colleagues at MLB. Previous Official Scoring experience in professional or amateur baseball is strongly preferred but not required.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Seasonal part-time on game days. Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays. If necessary, must be able to work long hours. Available to work all Flying Tigers home games.
