The Role and What You’ll Do:

The UFC Performance Institute (UFCPI) is the world’s first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) multi-disciplinary research, innovation, and training center, and is globally recognized for the performance infrastructures it provides to UFC and UFC Academy athletes. With world-class facilities in Las Vegas and Shanghai, and further global expansion planned in Mexico City in 2023, the mission of the UFCPI is to promote performance-enhancement through the delivery of world-class coaching, science, and medical services to the world’s best MMA and combat athletes. The core values of the UFCPI are aligned to maximizing the health and wellbeing of UFC athletes and to support fighters and coaches in optimizing their training, preparation, and ultimately performances in the octagon.

The successful candidate for this role will join a world-class interdisciplinary team of service providers with a proven track record of delivering world-leading support services to MMA and other professional athletes. The role will be integral in supporting the delivery of core services to UFC Academy athletes in Mexico and throughout Latin America, as well as wider business-related initiatives on a global scale. Aligned with the overall strategy of the UFC Performance Institute on a global scale, the Physical Therapy Manager will assume a leadership role within the discipline of physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine to develop the UFC Performance Institute as the leading training institution in performance, welfare, and research for MMA and combat sports. The Physical Therapy Manager will lead all clinical services for sports medicine and physical therapy locally in Mexico City, including (but not limited to) the UFC Academy, UFC rostered athletes and external partners. This role will collaborate daily with UFCPI team members, most notably the Technical Director - MMA, to ensure the effective operation of the UFC Academy and MMA talent-development pathway.

  • Work with the Sr. Director of Physical Therapy to develop comprehensive sports medicine and physical therapy services that reflect scientific principles as they relate to injury prevention, rehabilitation, manual therapy, and the treatment of illness and injury.
  • Provide elite-level physical therapy services to MMA fighters and athletes, including evaluations, injury prevention strategies, rehabilitation programs, and treatments that include manual, myofascial, modality, and therapeutic exercise interventions.
  • Deliver individual and group physical therapy sessions to world-class MMA fighters.
  • Develop third-party consultant relationships and form strategic partnerships with industry leaders in sports medicine, physical therapy, orthopedics, chiropractic, and other therapies.
  • Integrate physical therapy services into a multi-disciplinary model of care that includes technical training (i.e., MMA), strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sport science.
  • Maintain a comprehensive, indexed database of medical notes and treatments provided to athletes.
  • Participate in establishing physical therapy care guidelines and return to play protocols.
  • Participate and assists in the development of support systems to aid in athlete assessments, data collection, and management.
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with athletes, coaches, gyms, and managers to distribute relevant evidence-based guidelines, rehabilitation protocols, and information.
  • Participate in on-going training with athletes, coaches, and UFC PI staff members to ensure continued professional development and adherence to professional codes of conduct.
  • Within the rules of professional confidentiality, liaise with athletes, primary care managers, coaches, and other support staff as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of UFCPI educational, certification, and learning materials.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects and or applied research across the organization as appropriate.
  • Attend national and regional meetings and workshops, training courses and visiting national and regional sites on occasion and as appropriate.
  • Performs other tasks, projects, and responsibilities as requested by the Sr. Director of Physical Therapy to establish a world class performance facility.

You Have These:

  • Post Graduate Degree in Physiotherapy, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Sports Therapy, Sports Rehabilitation or ACBSP Chiropractor certification.
  • Current physical therapy licensure in good standing within Mexico preferred or demonstrate ability to obtain licensure required.
  • Awareness and proven ability to effectively collaborate with strength & conditioning staff on both prevention, rehabilitation and return to performance efforts.
  • Understanding of the demands of the MMA sport (i.e. physical, physiology, gender-specific, weight categories, weight management, travel requirements, etc.).
  • Understanding of existing evidence-based research, and the implementation of new research areas to enhance the sport, athletes, and coaches.
  • Must demonstrate outstanding leadership skills.
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English and Spanish both verbally and in writing.

We’d Love If You Also Have These:

  • Certifications in manual physical therapy and soft tissue/myofascial techniques
  • Professional experience in contact sports required, combat sports
  • 3+ years of working with professional, high level collegiate/amateur or tactical athletes in an integrated performance environment
  • Credentials focused on sport performance and sport rehab such as SCS, OCS, CSCS, CCSP, DACBSP, PES, CES

Travel:

There are limited travel requirements with this role, with the exception of one-off trips relating to UFCPI strategy and business development.
