Nutrition Associate

Job Summary:

The Nutrition Associate will work closely with the MLB Nutrition Coordinator, MiLB Nutrition Coordinator, and MLB Clubhouse Performance Chef to support a high-performance environment for players and staff. Coordinate with athletic trainers, team doctors, strength coaches, and other personnel as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Performance Culinary in Detroit and Toledo Nutrition Support:

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of meals using established methods, techniques, and recipes to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Collaborate with culinary staff to prepare and serve dishes for buffet service and ensure timely meal delivery.
  • Create daily production and prep lists for snacks, salads, fruits, and player-specific meals.
  • Customize dishes and snacks to accommodate individual player preferences, performance, and recovery goals.
  • Manage catering arrangements for home and road games, including maintaining accurate financial tracking of receipts.
  • Assist MLB Nutrition Coordinator and Chef with catering arrangements at home and on the road scheduling thoughtful performance-based meals. Including maintaining accurate financial tracking of receipts.
  • Collaborate with MLB Nutrition Coordinator to create clubhouse kitchen nutrition education material for the athletes on the importance of nutrition and how the meals support their training and recovery.
  • Assist with maintaining menu communication via Detroit Tigers app and menu board technology.
  • Minor League support- Provide nutrition education through materials and short team talks focused on topics such as hydration, meal prep, recovery nutrition, and safe supplementation.
  • Minor League support- order home meals and work with catering manager to ensure consistency for road meal ordering. Including maintaining accurate financial tracking of receipts.
  • Maintain supplement inventory and ensure safe use protocols are followed.

Food Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all meals comply with HACCP protocols and food safety standards.
  • Monitor food temperatures during preparation, cooking, and storage to prevent contamination.
  • Label and date all prepared items, adhering to FIFO guidelines to maintain freshness and reduce waste.
  • Collaborate with dietitians and performance staff to ensure meals align with individualized nutrition plans and dietary restrictions.

Kitchen Maintenance and Safety:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitized kitchen and dining environment, adhering to health codes and organizational standards.
  • Set up, maintain, and break down dining areas, including cold lines, salad stations, recovery snack stations, and beverage areas.
  • Conduct thorough daily cleaning of cookware, dishes, utensils, cooking equipment, and all kitchen surfaces.
  • Follow all organizational and regulatory standards for kitchen safety, including PPE usage and hazard prevention protocols.

Player and Staff Interaction:

  • Interact professionally, courteously, and positively with players and staff.
  • Adapt to specific dietary needs and requests, providing customized meals and snacks.
  • Build trust and rapport while maintaining professional boundaries and organizational standards of practice.
  • Document one-on-one nutrition consulting sessions and communicate updates when players move between affiliates to ensure continuity of care.

Education and Training:

  • Develop and deliver flexible nutrition education pieces based on team needs. Education can be delivered in person, through online platforms, or via closed social networks.
  • Provide education on high-priority topics such as fast-food options, electrolyte use, protein shake preparation, and pre- and post-game nutrition.
  • Share and collaborate on educational materials across affiliates to ensure consistency in messaging.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, food sciences, sports nutrition, or related fields is required. A Master’s degree is preferred .
  • Registered Dietitian credential required.
  • Certification and licensure as required by the state.
  • Preferably two years of experience as an Associate Dietitian in a professional or university program, with experience providing nutrition education and counseling.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Culinary background preferred.
  • Knowledge of HACCP guidelines, food service quality and safety practices, and energy expenditure as it relates to baseball.
  • Spanish speaking and Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoor and office environment
  • Occasional evenings, weekend and holiday hours required
  • Position will be located in Detroit, MI and Toledo, OH and will require travel between both locations
  • Must be able to lift +40lbs
  • Must be available for full time hours
  • May be required to travel to Lakeland, FL for Spring Training
