Grounds Spring Training Internship – Baltimore Orioles Spring Training, Sarasota, FL
Preferred dates: January 3ʳᵈ – March 31ˢᵗ
This is a paid internship, with the opportunity to earn college credit. 40+ hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
The ideal candidate is interested in a career in professional sports with an emphasis in Turf, Grounds, Landscape, Irrigation and Operations and is a current student or recent graduate of 2 or 4-year turf program.
Duties:
- Assists with the day-to-day maintenance tasks of baseball fields, common areas and facility grounds at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O’Neill Baseball Complex for spring events including spring training games, practices, camps, and special events
- Field set up and preparation for spring training camps and games including dragging infield skins, mound and homeplate preparation, clay moisture management, field lining
- Infield skin maintenance techniques such as nail dragging, rolling, conditioner applications, and edging
- Mound and homeplate repair and maintenance
- Painting of Orioles logo and foul lines
- Maintaining all landscaped areas including plants, trees, and shrubs through pruning, mulching, trimming, pesticide and fertilizer applications
- Turf maintenance tasks including but not limited to mowing, edging, raking, weeding, and trimming
- Operation of hand and power tools to complete necessary tasks
- Weather forecasting and impacts on field, practices, camps and games. Assist with tarp as necessary
- Fertilizing and pesticide applications
- Irrigation maintenance and repair
- Perform cultural practices such as aerifying, verticutting, and topdressing
- Inspect, clean, and help maintain equipment to ensure safe and proper operating conditions
- Work outdoors in adverse conditions
Skills/Qualifications Required:
- Recent graduate or current enrollment in 2 or 4 year turf program
- Experience in turf, landscape, or golf preferred, but not required
- Must be reliable, punctual, courteous, have good listening and multi-tasking skills
- Must be able to consistently lift up tp 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbs.
