Job Overview
The Earthquakes II Performance Coach holds the primary role and responsibility of managing the day-to-day and overall physical performance operations for the San Jose Earthquakes II MLS Next Pro team. The position will be an integral part of the preparation of athletes for elite athletic performance through training and education. In this capacity, the Earthquakes II Performance Coach will be responsible for design, implementation, and management of training loading and athletic development strategies, including on-field and gym-based training load periodization and physical preparation strategies. This position must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as the ability to collaborate and work well in a team setting. The Earthquakes II Performance Coach works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Health Performance and Head of Physical Performance.
Licenses or Certifications
· Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification by the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association)
· Member of and in good standing with NSCA
· Current professional CPR & AED certification
· Recommended additional certifications: Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), Certified Performance Sport Scientist (CPSS), and/or USAW Coach
Educational Experience and Skills
· Minimum four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or related field
· Preferred Master’s degree in Exercise Science or related field
· Proven ability in on-field and gym-based workload planning and monitoring, strength training, plyometrics, energy system and SAQ (speed/agility/quickness) development, flexibility, recovery, injury prevention, nutrition, and sports science.
· Implementation of strength and conditioning programming for athletes
· Preferred experience with analyzing data pertaining to player health and performance, conducting performance testing/monitoring, and data applications platforms.
Work Experience
· Minimum of three (3) years of Strength and Conditioning experience at the professional, MLSNEXT, Elite Academy, NCAA or collegiate level as a strength and conditioning and or performance coach.
· Strength and Conditioning Coach soccer experience preferred
· Preferred previous experience working in youth sports
· Experience working with soccer players in a weight room setting
· Workload monitoring experience with GPS, Force Plate, and other related athlete monitoring platforms preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Managing the day-to-day physical performance needs of the Earthquakes II MLS Next Pro Team and athletes assigned to the team
· Design and implementation warm-up, activation, and recovery strategies for team and athletes.
· Monitoring and reporting of player wellness and workload information
· Design the on-field and gym-based physical performance training plans and workload periodization planning, reporting, and intervention strategies.
· Design and implementation of safe and effective strength and conditioning programs-based age, team and individual athlete’s needs.
· Collaborate with the Sports Medicine Staff to co-develop sports-specific return to play programming for players returning from injury, including gym and field-based loading.
· Manage GPS tracking and other data streams around data collection.
· Organize and input data for the athletic performance database to ensure accurate reporting of athlete progress and planning.
· Coordinate athletic performance assessments for assigned team and athletes.
• Player education strategies to improve performance
• Maintain the appearance, safe functionality, and organization of equipment in the weight facility, as well as educate and enforce weight room rules
• Attend activities/meetings/programs as required by MLS Next Pro
• Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with Players, coaches, other Club personnel, and MLS staff
• Comply with all San Jose Earthquakes, MLS Next Pro, and U.S. Soccer policies and protocols
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Salary range: $68,000 - $78,000
