Position Summary:

The Seasonal Sports Nutrition Assistant will report to the New Orleans Pelicans’ Team Dietitian and play a key role in supporting the nutrition department. This position involves a variety of tasks focused on enhancing player performance through tailored nutrition strategies.

This is a seasonal, part time position (between 25-29 hours per week) based in the New Orleans, LA area, and will run from the end of September 2024 – April 2025 (extension possible due to post-season).

What you will be doing:

Nutrition Fueling Station Management

  • Maintain and restock inventory of snacks, supplements, and drinks.
  • Oversee the reception, inventory, and organization of food and sports nutrition products.
  • Ensure proper storage, cleanliness, and organization of all products.
  • Prepare and administer pre- and post-practice/game fueling, recovery, and hydration plans.
  • Assist in customizing individual fuel and hydration plans for players.
  • Prepare pre- and post-workout or practice smoothies.
  • Support the team dietitian by collaborating with kitchen staff on procuring performance nutrition products.

Player Education & Nutritional Support

  • Assist in developing and delivering player education on a variety of platforms (Teamworks) and topics, under the supervision of the team dietitian.
  • Provide nutrition guidance for post-injury recovery protocols and supplementation recommendations.
  • Develop educational materials, such as signs and handouts, for the practice facility, arena, and team travel.

Sports Nutrition Research

  • Stay up-to-date on current trends and evidence-based practices in sports nutrition.
  • Research topics of interest, including nutritional products, practices, and supplements.

Travel & Game Day Nutrition

  • Prepare and pack the Pelicans’ nutritional travel trunk before each road trip (e.g., protein powders, snacks, supplements).
  • Ensure snacks and supplements are stocked for games at the Smoothie King Center.

Café Operations & Menu Coordination

  • Review pre- and post-game menus (home and away games) and discuss any concerns or ideas with the team dietitian.
  • Review weekly café menus and provide feedback as needed.
  • Monitor the quality, presentation, and taste of food in the café throughout the week.
  • Coordinate special meal requests for players and coaches.
  • Post weekly menus on various platforms.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the team dietitian.

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition/dietetics, health science, or a related field.
  • Actively working towards registered dietitian (RD) credentials or already credentialed as a registered dietitian.
  • Previous experience in a collegiate or professional sports nutrition department or a team-related setting is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and handle multiple tasks.
  • Professional demeanor, positive attitude, and a willingness to learn.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and adapt to a varying schedule as needed.
  • Ability to lift heavy boxes and equipment.
  • Strict adherence to HIPAA regulations and professional codes of conduct.
