Vice President, Strategy & Planning
Major League Soccer’s Strategy and Business Intelligence group is tasked with supporting strategic decision making and resource allocation across the League – with a focus on driving fan growth, revenue capture, and operating efficiencies – by providing impactful data driven insights, analysis, and recommendations. We are seeking a Vice President who will bring a consultative approach to driving League strategy and planning, leading projects end-to-end and actively interfacing with senior leaders across the enterprise. This individual will bring collaborative energy, a desire to build, and thought leadership to the team.
Drive League office strategy and planning, working with business units to evaluate return on investment opportunities, developing strategies & initiatives to achieve key objectives, and developing business cases for investment
Lead MLS’ long-term planning process, project managing the development of a holistic strategic roadmap for the League through World Cup 2026
Lead the League’s annual planning process, including organizational priorities, goal setting, resource allocation evaluation and communication materials
Spearhead ad hoc strategic projects (e.g., operational efficiency studies, new initiative assessments), and support the formulation of new platform business plans
Manage League office cross-functional workstreams to support departments in the development of coordinated and effective business plans
Oversee the preparation of presentations, recaps and other materials needed to manage and communicate insights and strategic recommendations to key stakeholders, including Executives, Owner Committees, and Clubs etc.
Partner with Business Intelligence groups to identify key research needs & analysis required to drive strategic decision making, including scoping of qualitative / quantitative data projects
Collaborate with key internal team members and external resources to develop new growth platforms – including identifying macro trends, scoping needs, developing strategic framework, creating implementation plans, timelines, deliverables, etc.
Maintain strong understanding of League & Club metrics to develop key strategies & initiatives that achieve long-term and annual goals
Education and Experience
12+ years of work experience, with 10+ in either an in-house or external strategy function
Exceptional ability to structure ambiguity, analyze large sets of data, problem solve, and communicate recommendations to others in simple terms
Inspiring and effective team leader with experience managing and developing talent
Superior organization and project management skills
Experience in presenting to senior management teams
High-level of commitment to a quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
Ability to bring diverse functional groups together and gain alignment on key initiatives
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment
Advanced PowerPoint and Excel (e.g., full presentation development, exceptional financial modeling skills)
Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
Experience at a management consulting firm
Experience in the sports industry
MBA or other relevant advanced degree
Knowledge of the sport of soccer
Starting Base Salary: $200,000 – $250,000. MLS/SUM base salaries are contingent upon several factors including individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
