Position Summary: The Sport Science Manager will:

  1. Lead on the Sport Science support of Washington Spirit players, managing Sports Science staff, and in collaboration with Nutrition, Psychology, Medical and Data Analysis leads.

  2. Ensure integrated cutting-edge, and female-focused, Sports Science support for Washington Spirit players.

  3. Lead in the management, planning and delivery of the day-to-day wellness, physical training, and match load monitoring.

  4. Support and develop women as women.

  5. Work closely with the Technical, Medical and Performance Multi-Disciplinary Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cutting edge and forward thinking!

  • Responsible for delivering cutting-edge bespoke monitoring, management, and development plans to all First team players.

  • Design and lead all on-field conditioning, warm-ups, speed development and individual development sessions for the First team.

  • Provide Sport Science support to players during all training sessions and games, with some travel required.

  • Educate and support players, as well as produce appropriate visuals, on all performance and recovery related sport science themes.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, and Director of Medical to ensure all players receive individual physical programs, monitoring and management to track long-term player development.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation and technical team, develop a training language and philosophy as the basis for training development and delivery.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, develop an optimal physical profiling strategy.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation on the periodization planning with the technical team, encompassing daily planning and debrief sessions.

  • In collaboration with the Data Analytics Manager and Applied Sport Scientist develop appropriate daily reporting and data visualization templates to optimize the impact of data on the management of individual players.

  • Assist the Strength and Conditioning Coach, and PT/Rehab Coach, with the programming and delivery of gym-based strength and conditioning, and end-stage Return to Play sessions.

  • In collaboration with the Data Science Manager and Applied Sport Scientist, develop and oversee a centralized AMS system to optimize physical data visualization and interpretation, as well as to house data to assist in the long-term development of all players at the club.

  • In collaboration with the Performance and Medical staff create and monitor off-season training programs.

  • Support and develop staff to become industry leading practitioners through a consistent performance review process.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, and Director of Medical to provide Multi-Disciplinary support, and education, by implementing and monitoring optimal female health, wellbeing, recovery, physical profiling, strength and conditioning, training and match load monitoring, nutrition, psychology, and return to play strategies.

  • Under the guidance of the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, and Director of Medical Services, collaborate with the Performance and Medical staff in the review, development and co-ordination of Applied Performance and Medical research projects, contributing to an evolving world leading High Performance support program.

  • Manage and mentor PhD students, undergraduate student volunteers, and interns.

  • Attend and assist with workshops, in-service meetings, professional development courses/workshops and other development opportunities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise/Sports Science.

  • Master’s degree in Sports Science or performance related field.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the field of sports science/performance.

  • CSCS, UKSCA or equivalent.

  • Applied soccer experience preferred (exception may be granted for experience in other professional sports).

  • Experience working with female athletes with an understanding of female physiology is essential.

  • Sport Science support experience with elite soccer players (exception may be granted for experience in other professional sports).

  • Passion for the success of Women’s Professional Sports, innovation, research, and an appetite for an exciting new sports landscape

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

  • Enthusiastic and energetic team player, with experience of working as part of a Multi-Disciplinary team.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and a high degree of emotional intelligence.

  • A strong work ethic and friendly demeanor.

  • Knowledge of NWSL and International soccer.

  • Possess exceptional organizational skills with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize/multi-task.

  • Experience in utilizing sports science technologies such as: STATSports GPS, Polar, VALD (NordBord and Force Decks), and Athlete Management Systems.

  • Strong PC skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and experience of data visualization software such as Tableau, Power BI, and programming such as R code preferred.

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including scheduled games that can/will be weekends, evenings and perhaps Holidays.
