The Head of Grounds is responsible for the full oversight and performance of field maintenance which includes six playing surfaces/fields at the Seattle Sounders Headquarters and Training Facility. This role will have expertise and knowledge of grounds maintenance tools and techniques, turf grass science, skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance functions and landscape architecture. This role will also manage the grounds crew team members and maintain the necessary equipment needed to accomplish tasks in a timely and efficient manner.


  • Supervises the construction and maintenance of Sounders FC Training Facility grounds.

  • Performs daily responsibilities of fields which includes mowing, irrigation, fertilizing, pesticide applications, field painting, cultural turfgrass practices, equipment operation and maintenance and snow removal.

  • Develops and implements plans to reduce impacts on the environment including storm water management, waste management and erosion control.

  • Manages inventory and oversees the preventive equipment maintenance and replacement programs

  • Orders and maintains all products necessary for grounds maintenance.

  • Ensures the safe operation of light duty vehicles such as mowers, tractors and trucks.

  • Performs seasonal maintenance of the equipment fleet and ensure proper maintenance is performed in a timely manner.

  • Assures the necessary practice equipment (goals, benches, etc.) is set up, maintained and in good working condition.

  • Prepares the annual budget for the maintenance and improvements in accordance with strategic plans and defined maintenance standards.

  • Fosters professional relationships with coaching staff, first team support staff, players, co-workers and tenants.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Interviews, hires, trains, directs and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the sports facilities grounds.

  • Oversees the training, scheduling and deploying of personnel to accomplish the work in compliance with OSHA and Worker Right-to Know standards.


  • 5+ years of grounds maintenance related work experience in professional/collegiate athletics with 2 years of lead or management experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of equipment and procedures of grounds construction and maintenance.

  • Ability to operate turf related equipment (i.e., tractors, mowers, aerifiers, field paint machine).

  • Knowledge of techniques of planting and maintaining plants, trees and shrubs suited to the area location.

  • Candidate must have strong leadership, interpersonal and supervisory skills.

  • Must be detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to prioritize and juggle tasks.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Fluency in Spanish is desirable but not required.

  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time and in various weather conditions.


  • This position will work in-person from the Sounders FC Headquarters and training facility in Renton, WA.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, as needed.

  • Must be fully vaccinated at the time of hire and follow all club and league COVID-19 protocols.

  • Must reside within Washington state upon date of hire.

  • Must be able to facilitate own local travel.

  • Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship

  • Responsibilities include regular work outdoors and may require standing on feet for long periods of time, as well as some lifting of up to 40 pounds.
