The Communications Intern will assist the Communications Department in its day-to-day operations throughout the year in a variety of assignments.
Communications Intern duties include, but are not limited to:
Compile and distribute daily news clips for front office personnel
Record and transcribe press conferences and interviews
Set up equipment for press conferences
Prepare, write and edit materials for the media guide, gameday program, game notes and season in review and other materials as assigned
Write and disseminate press releases and media advisories as assigned
Manage and clean the media room
Ensure the media room has a daily schedule, updated rosters, releases and league information
Handle the upkeep of the department’s media website on NFLOMG.com
Update the team’s roster, player biographies, statistical information and cross-check statistics on a daily and weekly basis on NFLOMG.com
Manage individual and team records on NFLOMG.com
Distribute the daily media schedule to members of the department
Monitor and attend practice daily unless assigned otherwise.
Assist with supervision of open locker media sessions and practice sessions open to the media
Coordinate interview requests with players and assistant coaches as assigned
Edit the flip card for all home games in coordination with the opposing team’s PR department
Produce the weekly Press Box Notes, which includes information about the broadcasting network, parking, gameday protocols, field access, interview locations, etc
Produce the weekly Public Address flip card for both internal and external PA
Responsible for bringing all gameday materials from the facility to the stadium the day prior to the game and for transportation of department’s gameday staff to the stadium on gameday
Set up the press box with flip cards, weekly game releases, programs and press box notes
Serve as the gameday sideline media coordinator, reporting all injuries to the Director of Communications in the press box for all home games
Prepare and distribute game credentials for media
Assist in developing talking points on NFL and team-related issues
Assist the department during crisis communications
Monitor social media (players and media) for all Steelers and NFL related topics
Work the duration of Steelers training camp
Assist with other projects as assigned by department members
Intern Candidate Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism or related field
Prior experience in sports communication, including internships with PR, sports information, media relations or journalism preferred
In-depth knowledge of professional football and sports media
Excellent communication and writing skills
Ability to interact, in a professional manner, with a variety of people (staff, players and media)
Organized, detail-oriented and a positive self-starter who works well with others
Ability to work independently and follow through while asking questions when needed
Ability to set up equipment for press conferences and game day requiring light to medium lifting (up to 20 lbs)
Proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams etc.), Adobe programs (InDesign, Photoshop), project management tools (Basecamp), and social media websites
Capability to learn current NFL statistics platforms (StatsPass, TruMedia, NFLGSIS, NFLOMG, Pro Football Reference)
Duration/Hours: This is a 1 year term internship. Full-Time Year-Round (In-Season: approx. 40-60 hours/week; off-season: approx. 40 hours/week). Must be available weekends during the season and in the off-season as needed.
