Summary:

Assist club counsel with certain aspects of the legal operations of the Mets organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Include the following, under the supervision of club counsel; other duties may be assigned.

  • Litigation: Assist with oversight of outside counsel, and liaising with MLB counsel, handling various types of litigation. Includes maintaining a litigation log, summarizing key litigation information for club counsel, ensuring that deadlines are tracked and met, and assisting with the discovery process including investigations, document gathering, and responding to discovery demands and subpoenas. Oversee the legal department’s handling of California cumulative trauma claims, and assist with workers’ compensation claims. Draft, distribute and monitor litigation hold notices. Assist the organization with ensuring that the Accounting Department timely reports of claims to insurers. Investigate class action claim notices and file claims.
  • Contracts: Draft various types of agreements and amendments or revisions, including advertising and sponsorship agreements, suite agreements, special event and hospitality function agreements, location agreements, miscellaneous marketing and promotional agreements, purchase and services agreements, releases and waivers. Gather contract information from other departments to ensure completion, accuracy, and compliance with organization policies. Manage the Legal Department’s workflow process with the Corporate Sales and Metropolitan Hospitality departments including keeping other departments apprised of the status of contract drafts and estimated completion dates. Review contracts for various Baseball Department staff to help ensure compliance with organization policies, MLB rules, and applicable laws.
  • SAFETY Act: Manage the Legal Department’s role in the process of ensuring documentation is created and updated, maintained, and gathered by the Security Department, as required in connection with the organization’s SAFETY Act awards. Assist with the preparation of SAFETY Act deliverables and applications for the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Labor and Employment: Assist with audits conducted by union benefit funds, and with information gathering in connection with grievances and arbitrations brought by unions and agency or administrative proceedings brought by employees or government entities.
  • Immigration/International: Assist with the process of obtaining employee visas, and participate in and track the status of the visa application process.
  • Administrative and Miscellaneous: Maintain the Legal Department’s database of key documents. Experience using legal operations technology tools such as contract management software, document management software and matter tracking software for calendaring, tracking and reporting. Administer the legal department calendar and the distribution of reminders of upcoming key dates and deadlines to other departments. Oversee maintenance of legal department archives and compliance with document retention policy. Conduct legal research. Draft and revise organization policies and manuals and legal correspondence. Perform administrative tasks as assigned, which will be more extensive and will include duties of an Administrative Assistant if and when the Legal Department does not have a dedicated Administrative Assistant.

Education, Experience, Language Skills:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year of relevant experience (e.g., in-house legal department, law firm, or equivalent environment), and proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat, is required.

Transactional and/or litigation experience (as a paralegal or equivalent), and the ability to read, write and communicate in Spanish (including communicating with outside counsel and reviewing and translating legal documents), is preferred but not required. Exceptional communication skills required.

Must be able to simultaneously accomplish multiple quantitatively and qualitatively challenging tasks in a high-paced environment.
