This position will serve as the Financial Controller for NBA & BAL Africa, partnering closely with the senior leadership team (SLT), business units, Africa Finance, and NBA headquarters in NY/NJ. The Controller will manage all aspects of the controllership function, accounting, treasury, and management reporting in coordination with NBA Finance and Controller groups to ensure compliance with accounting and tax requirements. This position will also oversee general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivables management and statutory reporting, treasury, internal control, tax, and asset management.

Major Responsibilities:

Leadership of the Controllership and Accounting function

  • Compliance with all accounting procedures, processes, and controls, as well as implementing improvements and efficiencies where possible, including:

  • Compliance with local fiscal and regulatory compliance for all related entities, including tax and statutory financial statement filing requirements

  • Lead the Accounts Payable process and ensure timely payments in accordance with contractual agreements

  • Lead the Accounts Receivable process and deliver accurate, timely, and insightful Africa accounts receivable aging reporting, with a view to improving any A/R balances.

  • Manage the month-end and year-end close process for each respective legal entity

  • Deliver monthly accounting reconciliations for the regional entities

  • Oversee compliance with NBA travel & entertainment policy and expense reporting

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with country-specific accounting and tax advisors

  • Manage the outsource payroll provider and process ensuring accurate payroll calculation and timely payment to employees.

  • Support Human Resources, Legal, HRIS and Payroll, as necessary, concerning employment status and payroll issues that may arise for regional office staff

Responsible for the overall integrity of the financial results for the Africa region

  • Prepare, analyze, and compile operational explanations for P/L and B/S versus Budget, and Year-to-Date

  • Drive automation of processes and process excellence

  • Responsible for ensuring that adequate internal controls are maintained

  • Draft financial policies and procedures to ensure consistent application of accounting rules and have documentation on hand detailing how and why accounting decisions were reached

  • Communicate and reinforce corporate policies and procedures throughout NBA in Africa

  • Enforce fixed asset tagging control system and monitor the movement of fixed assets

Responsible for Tax/Treasury Operations and Statutory Filings

  • Interface with Internal/External auditors and ensure local statutory filings are completed in a timely manner

  • Support the tax department with all Africa-related tax matters, including VAT compliance/recovery; Withholding Taxes; Transfer Pricing; Tax Packages; Statutory Tax Compliance

  • Coordinate the preparation, review, and filing of Statutory financials, and corporate tax returns with the NJ Tax and accounting team and Accounting service providers.

  • Manage the monthly intercompany funding process ensuring entities are appropriately funded and intercompany balances are settled timely.

  • In coordination with the NJ treasury team, develop and deliver monthly cash forecasts for the Africa entities.

  • Co-lead the FBAR filing process with the NJ treasury team ensuring all required documents are completed and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Ensure timely delivery of any Letters of Credit (LOC) issued in Africa in coordination with the Treasury department.

  • Support all Finance Systems including SAP upgrade implementation.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge in IFRS and US GAAP accounting

  • Strong Tax knowledge

  • Strong Consolidation skills

  • Highly analytical with an exceptional level of attention to detail

  • Advanced MS Excel proficiency required Strong Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP formulas)

  • Strong project and process leadership ability

  • Self-motivated, dedicated, and driven to achieve results/goal-oriented

  • Must be a team player who can work well with other NBA departments

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills

  • Exceptional knowledge of financial systems, SAP and Blackline a plus

  • Experience in process reengineering, a plus

Experience Needed:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in accounting, finance, or related business role.

  • Exposure in the professional sports, entertainment, media, or services industry preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years post-qualified experience preferred

  • Experienced in leveraging accounting software, ideally SAP

  • Prior Auditing and M&A experience beneficial

  • Prior big 4 accounting firm experience, strongly preferred

Educational Background Required:

  • Accounting bachelor's degree/qualification

  • Professional Accounting Qualification (ACCA, CIMA, CPA etc.)

  • Advanced degree a plus, but not required
