Position Summary: This position is part of the NBA Social & Digital Content team which focuses on creating, distributing and publishing content to the NBA's portfolio of social and digital product offerings. Candidate will be a member of the digital content team and will have the exciting opportunity to create best-in-class storytelling visualizations for and the NBA app.

The ideal candidate is a visual specialist who can identify storylines, gather data, design visualizations and write copy. This position will work with fellow designers, reporters and editors to create unique visual packages for any and all platforms. This position will take advantage of all NBA resources - from advanced stats to photos to audio to original video - in pursuit of developing and presenting stories in new and innovative ways.

You must thrive in a fast-paced work environment, be proactive, exhibit strong awareness of content monetization trends, sound work ethic with an aptitude for team collaboration and communication. The ideal candidate has their finger on the pulse of the NBA and spends their free time immersing themselves in podcasts, message boards or consuming short and long form content about the NBA.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Integrates a range of storytelling forms and disciplines like statistical visualizations, video, photography, audio and animation

  • Will have room to explore a range of technologies, including augmented and virtual reality and machine learning

  • Makes on-brand visual choices that provide informational clarity, drive behavior, and respect platform and interaction conventions

  • You solve for complex states and iterate based on usage patterns, user feedback, and an evolving competitive landscape

  • Creates a storytelling experience that is unique to the NBA digital experience that can be extended to social media platforms

  • Helps the department maintain a focus on short- and long-term objectives, including building a culture that prizes creativity and initiative

  • Create production-ready design deliverables that use existing or new patterns as needed

  • Collaborate with the Product and Web Development teams to assure the quality of visual presentations across NBA products

  • Understands localization from the perspective of language significance, regional/country significance, and event significance

  • Works with NBA regional content producers on content calendar and promotional efforts around localized content opportunities

  • Communicate content trends and industry shifts, including implications and recommendations, to internal and external partners

  • Champion initiatives to experiment and create differentiated content

  • Analyze content performance results and summarize key findings

  • Evaluate operational workflow for efficiency and scalability; identify challenges and provide innovative solutions

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 4+ years of demonstrated strong design skills, basic front-end development skills and solid news judgment

  • Candidates should have experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript

  • Candidates should be able to edit video and should be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop)

  • Photo editing skills are required

  • Candidates should have strong organizational skills

  • This person will work across groups to plan and implement promotional images for NBA products seven days a week across several time zones

  • Experience with product design and production would be an advantage, but is not required

  • Experience collaborating closely with product managers and engineers

  • Comfortable working with remote teammates

  • Prior experience working on digital products, including mobile apps, websites & connected devices Must have knowledge of the game of basketball - past and present

  • Knowledge of sports media landscape is a plus

  • Previous experience working within content management systems

  • WordPress experience is preferred

  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as this position may include working days, nights, weekends and holidays based on the NBA calendar

  • Must be a team player who can work collaboratively


Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Digital Media or related field preferred
