The Assistant Manager, Grounds for Jackie Robinson Training Complex directs and participates in the maintenance of sports fields, practice areas, landscape, and other common areas and performs related work as required. The Assistant Manager, Grounds assists with the day-to-day management of the Grounds department personnel and serves in the Manager, Grounds’ capacity during absences.
Assist in planning, supervising, and executing the maintenance of athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces), landscape, and common areas with regards to safety, playability, and aesthetics.
Performs and supervises staff in tasks including but not limited to mowing, edging, infield clay work, mound/home plate repair, tarp pulls, batting practice set-up and break-down, and pre/post game preparation and repair.
Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment and/or operates mowing and other equipment; supervises chemical applications and/or operates and calibrates chemical application equipment; supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
Schedules and supervises maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of crew and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and employer communication.
Assists in managing the Grounds department personnel as assigned by the Manager, Grounds, including but not limited to recruiting, hiring, training, day-to-day scheduling and management, time review, assisting in disciplinary processes, regularly directing employee’s work, and evaluation.
Fulfills the responsibilities of the Manager, Grounds in the absence of the Manager, Grounds.
Helps ensure proper safety procedures including OSHA requirements are followed by all Grounds Crew personnel.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager, Grounds.
The preferred candidate will have an education specializing in Turf Management, Agronomy, Plant Science, Horticulture, or equivalent discipline, or equivalent experience.
Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields, landscape, and common areas. Prior baseball turf maintenance experience required, preferably 2+ years. Professional baseball turf maintenance experience preferred.
Proficient understanding of the sports requirements for field layouts and markings.
Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Candidate must be a professional, self-starter who will work as a team player and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others. Supervisory experience, at least three years preferred.
Able to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time and in extreme weather conditions, especially heat, as well as rain and some cold.
Possession of a valid Driver's License and excellent driving record.
Recommended but not required to possess a Florida Pesticide and Fertilizer Applicator Turf and Ornamentals License.
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
