The Counsel is a critical player in the Chicago Cubs Legal Department and will provide legal support to business units across the Chicago Cubs organization and its affiliated entities. The position will report directly to the Deputy General Counsel and will provide support on all legal matters, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating routine agreements and assisting in corporate and transactional workload. This position will require excellent business judgment, adept problem-solving and strategic thinking, with an ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, fast-paced environment.


  • Review, draft and negotiate a variety of agreements including technology and other commercial agreements, service agreements and waivers, event contracts, non-disclosure agreements, marketing and sponsorship agreements, suite licenses, and real estate agreements

  • Advise and assist on advertising and marketing initiatives, including sweepstakes, contests and promotions, and privacy matters, including drafting rules, releases, and reviewing promotional and creative materials.

  • Assist with corporate governance and corporate finance matters, as requested

  • Assist on policy drafting, updates and compliance, including researching legal issues for the development and improvement of policies and procedures.

  • Support legal team with the management of various litigation matters, including by assisting with legal research and document production

  • Ensure compliance with record retention, privacy and data protection laws and regulations

  • Support business partners with respect to legal issues surrounding operations

  • Help facilitate the day-to-day operations and workload of an in-house Legal Department

  • Work closely with and assist General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and other legal team members

  • All other duties, as assigned


  • A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and admission to practice in Illinois

  • One to two years of legal experience required, preferably —at a full-service law firm or large corporate legal department

  • Experience drafting and reviewing commercial contracts required

  • Experience in legal matters related to data privacy, intellectual property, and/or advertising initiatives encouraged

  • Superior written and oral communication skills, including ability to translate legal reasoning for non-lawyers

  • Organizational skills and business acumen

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build strong, collaborative and consultative relationships with key business partners

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality

  • Ability to prioritize workload and use time efficiently

  • Flexibility and the ability to work non-standard hours as needed
