Marquee Ventures (“MV”) is a new venture capital fund anchored by the parent company of the Chicago Cubs and Marquee Sports Network. MV's primary mission is to identify and fund early-stage companies in emerging and relevant sectors, including but not limited to commerce, entertainment, sports, and consumer wellness. The fund will seek out companies solving hard problems with exceptional leadership teams and demonstrated traction.

ROLE:

This is a unique opportunity to help launch MV and grow it into a trusted partner for founders of high-growth companies. As the second hire, you will work collaboratively with the Managing Partner to develop the MV brand, build out the investment theses, source opportunities, conduct deal diligence, and manage the portfolio to drive strong financial returns for the fund. This is an entrepreneurial role with the potential to expand responsibilities as the fund grows. Title and compensation commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct due diligence, market research, valuation comps, and financial analysis to support investment decisions. Prepare succinct investment memos and financial models to communicate the opportunities and risks inherent in an investment

  • Help develop larger, longer-term investment themes and perspectives, creating strategies for how to invest against identified opportunities

  • Source unique investment opportunities through participation in industry events, conferences, and direct outreach

  • Help manage select administrative tasks such as portfolio monitoring, pipeline reports, and KPI reporting

  • Promote the MV brand by developing relationships with: VC firms, startup accelerators, founders, and other members of the venture ecosystem

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field. MBA or other advanced degree is considered a plus but not a requirement

  • 3-5 years of applicable experience as a consultant, operator, or investor with a track record of going above and beyond expectations

  • Demonstrated passion for working with entrepreneurs and early-stage companies that is supplemented by intellectual curiosity and a desire to wear multiple hats on the investment team

  • Strong research, analysis, and writing capabilities to prepare investment memos and diligence summaries

  • At least the beginning of a venture and startup network that can provide you and the fund access to many exceptional investing opportunities. A plan to expand one’s network in this role

  • Expertise in evaluating new markets, new technologies, and emerging customer needs

  • Comfortable dissecting financial models and understanding key drivers of a business

  • Critical thinker and problem solver; willingness to proactively seek out answers to challenging questions and an ability to move projects forward with imperfect information
