Seasonal Public Relations Assistant

The Public Relations Assistant is a part-time position responsible for providing a wide range of support to the Detroit Red Wings public relations department during the 2023-24 season (September – Playoffs) in all areas including, but not limited to, game day PR responsibilities, comprising game notes and supporting community events and initiatives. The position requires an average of 30 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle game day media relations responsibilities, including the production of line charts, postgame reports and the copying and distribution of game notes, statistics and press clips
  • Assist in the creation of game notes, including milestone tracking and updating player bios
  • Assist in writing press releases for Red Wings player transactions
  • Maintain comprehensive media clips
  • Assist with publicity plans for other sporting events held at Little Caesars Arena, including serving as the on-site PR contact for college hockey events
  • Assist media relations and community impact staffs with activities and projects, including but not limited to generating and pitching story ideas to media and serving as on-site liaison for Red Wings players and media
  • Assist with coverage of community impact events and initiatives and non-hockey operations communication, including but not limited to press releases, media advisories and articles covering the event for DetroitRedWings.com
  • Edit and contribute to annual Media Guide
  • Create visiting media contact list to disseminate necessary media procedures in advance of upcoming games
  • Perform all other statistical research projects as assigned

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Collegiate experience
  • Experience writing game notes and press releases
  • Evidence of solid communication skills through verbal, written and telephonic channels
  • Ability to demonstrate computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Adobe InDesign
  • Ability to produce material under strict deadlines with a high attention to detail
  • Knowledge of hockey and Red Wings prospects

Preferred Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Experience working in the sports and entertainment industry, particularly in hockey
  • Pursuit or completion of a degree in the fields of Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or Sports Management is preferred
  • Experience in public/media relations or community relations

Working Conditions

  • Irregular and extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Exposure to moderate - high noise level
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Frequent visual/auditory attention
